Getting ready: Former president Donald Trump is scheduled to visit the MBS International Airport in Tittabawassee Township on Wednesday, May 1, for his 2024 presidential campaign rally. Officials are preparing for a crowd of nearly 10,000 attendees, nearly doubling Freeland's population. Here's a look at how the small town plans to manage the event. No longer running: Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley has ended his campaign to succeed Dan Kildee in Congress, saying Democratic Party leaders were not letting candidates compete on an even playing field. Related: Former congressman Peter Meijer has dropped out of the Republican primary race for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat, saying the “fundamentals of the race have changed significantly” since he launched his campaign in November. |

2 years since pushed to abandoned motel, seniors may return to once-condemned building |
Finding home: It's been almost two years since seniors living at the Riverview Terrace apartment building were evacuated on July 25, 2022 due to large cracks in the building’s foundation. Now, the displaced residents may return after the property underwent more than $7 million in repairs to its structure and more. Unique structure: An Ann Arbor home with an onion shaped dome that has turned heads for over a century may be demolished soon as it stands in the way of a 17-story high-rise. Development: The owner of the Fifth Third building in downtown Grand Rapids is requesting a $15.2 million public subsidy for its plan to convert the top seven floors of the structure into 140 apartments. |

As Michigan cows get sick with bird flu, what does that mean for our milk? |
| On the farm: For the first time ever, the highly pathogenic avian influenza has jumped from poultry to cattle after it infected a Texas herd in March. Officials are now trying to figure out how bird flu has spread to dairy farms in eight states, including Michigan, and testing milk samples for the virus. Health officials have said that the flu does not impact commercial milk supply and that pasteurization kills the virus. But virus particles were found pasteurized milk last week. The FDA says it will now do broad testing of a “large representative national sample” to understand what this means. Stay informed: Although health officials say the risk to the public remains low, there is rising concern about the effects of the virus. Detroit has obliterated the NFL draft attendance record |
While announcing the Lions’ selection in the fourth round on Saturday afternoon, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Detroit had surpassed a three-day attendance total of more than 700,000 people for the NFL draft. That crushes the previous record of 600,000, set by Nashville five years ago. Making the team: Caleb Williams and J.J. McCarthy are walking into perhaps the most enviable situations imaginable for rookie quarterbacks in Chicago and Minnesota after the NFL Draft. That's a win for them, and a potential loss for everyone else. New job: Former Michigan men's basketball head coach Juwan Howard is back in the NBA. Howard will join the Brooklyn Nets as an assistant coach, according to a report Friday from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. |

Michigan’s tallest waterfall could be added to state park system in honor of veterans |
Scenic site: A resolution seeking state park status for Douglass Houghton Falls, Michigan's tallest waterfall, has been approved by the Michigan House of Representatives. The site was purchased in 2018 from a Vietnam veteran who sold it with the understanding the park would be dedicated in honor of Michigan’s veterans. More resources: Staff at Aleda E. Lutz Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Saginaw now offer telephone-based emergency care services, allowing military veterans from the comfort of their homes to engage with hospital professionals. Waving flags: The 2024 Tight Lines for Troops charity fishing tournament in Manistee offers veterans a chance to fish Lake Michigan for free – and then receive a “welcome home” that many of them never got after their service.
