How a mustard recipe made it back to a Michigan family after 40 years |
“Where is Mucky Duck mustard?": Growing up in Kalamazoo, Lawrence Farrell loved the British style pub mustard. So much so he recognized it instantly when his then-finance, Jen, made him a batch as a Christmas gift when they were first engaged. Jen Wright’s family had been making the mustard since the 1970s and were the originators of the recipe. Marrying into mustard royalty: In 1983, his wife’s grandma sold the recipe to a family friend who created Mucky Duck pub mustard. At its height, the brand was widespread in 500 stores across the state and in 15 different states. Farrell decided to start a mission to buy back the family recipe. After thinking about it: Farrell and his wife both decided that if they brought back the recipe they didn’t want to start from scratch. They needed the original Mucky Duck. And so the hunt began. |

What is left: A mighty stamp mill once stood on the edge of Lake Superior’s red sandstone cliffs. Now, only its crumbled ruin and a tiny village, Freda, remain. What it once was: Freda featured two bars, churches, a large boarding house, a post office and a fire department and the village housed about 850 people at its peak. Freda fell quiet after Champion Mining Company closed in 1967. Today, about 40 residents remain. What now? Unlike stamp sands swallowing parts of the eastern Keweenaw shore, there are no plans in motion to clean up the stamp sand beaches downdrift of Freda and Redridge. |

Boomers would rather remodel, live with their kids than enter tight housing market |
A housing standoff: Baby boomers want to downsize but don’t want to give up their stellar rate for a worse housing option. Meanwhile millennials are “house hacking” their way into the market by having tenants to cover the mortgage payments they can’t afford. They both want a piece of the slim housing stock, but don’t want to buckle under rates that have been in the 6-7% range for the past six months. So rather than move, homeowners are reinvesting in renovations. More in public interest: Michigan lawmakers included $150 million toward the effort to restart the Palisades nuclear plant as part of a record $81.7 billion state budget passed last week. |

Fireworks, parades and a pennant race? Tigers are closer to first than they’ve been in years |
Diving in: Most projections still say the Tigers are one of the worst teams in baseball with only a minimal chance of making the playoffs. (See here, here or here). And the Tigers have a nearly identical record at this point to the one they had in 2022, 2021, 2018 and 2017. They just happen to play in a really bad division. Yet facts are facts: The Tigers (37-46) enter today only 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Minnesota Twins (43-43). That’s the closest they’ve been to first place on the Fourth of July since 2014, when they were in first place. For the Red Wings: Steve Yzerman entered free agency with a lot of salary-cap space and a lengthy shopping list, which he methodically checked off. |

Ride at night: The crew of the S.S. Badger is bringing back overnight voyages. Lake Michigan Carferry, which owns and operates the 70-year-old vessel on Lake Michigan, announced that its overnight sailings known as doubles will return after a three-year absence on July 6. A sneak peek: A beachfront hotel with views of Lake Michigan from every balcony is getting ready to open its doors this summer. Happy pups: Your furry family members are welcome to cool off at these nine dog-friendly beaches at Michigan state parks. |
