In today's newsletter, how a manmade wetland is helping fix roads, Ford laying off more Michigan workers due to UAW strike and a preview of rivalry week.

What does the weather look like this week?

There are two rain systems coming into Michigan this week. They come back to back, moving in Thursday and not leaving until late Saturday. Get your outdoor chores done early.

The two rain systems won’t be heavy rains. The rains will be somewhat sporadic but after they settle in the weather will be more wet than dry. Here's our forecast on when and where.

Looking into the future, an update came out on the strengthening El Niño. NOAA’s ocean forecasters are starting to give a chance at this winter’s El Niño being near the top of the list for strength.

Housing shortage triggers alarm for towns across Michigan

What's happening: More local leaders, in rural, suburban and urban communities throughout Michigan, are raising alarms about housing shortages.

Data: The number of local officials reporting a lack of single-family housing has nearly doubled in the past six years – going from 23% to 41% – according to a recent Michigan Public Policy Survey from the University of Michigan. Additionally, 46% said they don’t have enough multi-family housing. This is another steep jump from 30%.

More in housing: An order from the Michigan Supreme Court is set to make some pandemic eviction rules permanent in November.

How a manmade wetland is helping fix roads

Background: The Perry Wetland Mitigation Bank was created by the Michigan Wetland Board, which uses state transportation funding to develop wetland banking sites which local road agencies can tap into.

In that respect, it works like a typical commercial wetland bank which sells space, called “credits,” to developers who are required by law to replace wetlands they destroy.

Also in environmental: Gov. Whitmer announced a $1 billion federal grant for a clean hydrogen project.

It's rivalry week in Michigan!

Here we go: Michigan vs Michigan State football is set for Saturday night at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. Here's how to get tickets for around $100 each.

Moving on from the past: Despite the Wolverines opening as a 23-point favorite on Circa Sports, the team plans to prepare "like any other game." Michigan is looking to set aside last year's tunnel drama and "handle business like always."

On home turf: Michigan State hopes the in-state rivalry can help it refocus quickly after dropping back-to-back Big Ten games on the road with a lead in the fourth quarter. Michigan State basketball is holding a free scrimmage ahead of the game in the Breslin Center.
