House where Martin Luther King Jr. planned Alabama marches is moving to Michigan |
A piece of history: Starting this year, the Jackson House will be dismantled piece-by-piece and trucked the more than 800 miles north to Dearborn where it will eventually be open to the public as part of The Henry Ford Museum. In case you missed it: The tape of MLK’s 1963 speech at Western Michigan University went missing. 24 years later, a copy turned up at a grocery store. Speaking of museums: A children’s museum is an added attraction for a Lake Michigan beach town Up North, attracting thousands of visitors throughout the summer. |

Fish kills may be common during Michigan’s spring thaw, DNR says |
A potentially startling sight: Don’t be too alarmed if you see groups of dead fish this spring. The Department of Natural Resources says it’s probably normal. After ice and snow melt on Michigan lakes this spring, it may be more likely for people to discover dead fish or other aquatic animals along the shoreline. Garden Talk: Some years we can rush it in Michigan when it comes to planting our gardens. This year doesn’t look like rushing it would be wise, unless you want to replant. For when it's warm again: Cedar Point has lowered the price of gate admission for the first time in nearly 20 years. The amusement park will charge $80 for gate admission in 2023. Last year, it was $85. In 2021, it was $75. |

Charging your phone in public? Beware of ‘juice jacking’ |
Have you heard of this?: It’s called “juice jacking,” and Michigan’s top consumer protection officer says it should be on your mind the next time you think of using a public phone charger. What to know: Juice jacking is when a cyber criminal secretly installs malware into a public charging station, often found in places like airports and hotel lobbies. When you plug in a device, that malware can transfer over, locking the device or exporting personal data and passwords. A different kind of juice: Iron Fish Distillery in Thompsonville and Short’s Brewing in Bellaire announced Monday that they have created Soft Parade fruit-infused vodka. |

Lions re-sign defensive back who was temporarily paralyzed on field last year |
Welcome home: Saivion Smith couldn’t move his arms or legs. He couldn’t even speak. For about 20 seconds on that field in New England, the Detroit Lions defensive back was paralyzed. Half a year later, he’s back. Also for the Lions: NFL Network reports Utah cornerback Clark Phillips III will meet with the Lions on one of their 30 pre-draft visits this week. Phillips was crowned the Pac-12′s top defensive player while intercepting six passes in 2022. For hockey: Here are the final grades for the 2022-23 Red Wings, top players delivered, some underperformed. |

Records detail slaying of Ann Arbor woman Jude Walton |
Jude Walton, 51, was found dead on Thursday, April 13, when Ann Arbor police were called to do a well-being check at her home. Walton died of strangulation, Assistant Washtenaw County Prosecutor Jessica Blanch confirmed. The latest: Ricky McCain is accused in the death of Walton. He was arraigned in the 14A-1 District Court on charges of open murder, first-degree home invasion and assault with intent to commit sexual penetration. McCain stood mute to the charge. A community leader: As the sunset burned warmly, dozens gathered for a vigil to honor the life and death of Jude Walton on Friday, April 15. She is being remembered for her welcoming spirit. |
