Life got a bit busy for me last month, that could be why I've been unengaged in all the talk about the upcoming solar eclipse. But as April 8 gets closer, it's time I buckle down. If you're like me, you'll need to get yourself a pair of solar eclipse glasses, it can be dangerous to look without them. But be aware, counterfeits and fakes are making their way around. With the peak of spring break season this week followed immediately by a surge of traffic for the historic total solar eclipse, the Federal Aviation Administration is alerting travelers to expect delays in the days ahead. |

Heavy snow possible in Michigan this week |
Forecast: A pocket of cold air aloft is going to sweep down into Michigan on Tuesday night through Thursday morning. At the same time, a storm system will move in from the southwest. The two weather-makers will combine to produce some heavy snow, mostly across far Northern Michigan. More from Mark: Wondering where you have your best chance to see the solar eclipse? Still using your cell phone while driving? Michigan police to crack down |
On the lookout: April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning is teaming up with police agencies throughout the state to heighten enforcement of Michigan’s Hand-Free Driving Law. No joke: In one day in Bay County, police stopped nearly 200 motorists for using handheld devices while driving. A first violation carries with it a $100 fine or 16 hours of community service, according to the new penalties. A second violation costs $250 or 24 hours community service. Fines double when there is a crash. More in public interest: Some employees have been laid off by a company still dealing with the fallout from a massive fire last month, according to documents filed with the state of Michigan. |

Police recover body of missing 21-year-old Michigan man in Anchor Bay |
A day after he was reported missing, police recovered the body of 21-year-old Jonathan Kloss Friday afternoon. Kloss -- who is from Chesterfield Township -- was jet skiing on Anchor Bay near the St. Clair River with a friend Thursday night when both men unexpectedly went into the water. Near U.P. border: A Wisconsin woman was arrested in connection with the death of a 3-year-old girl. A press release from confirmed 32-year-old Samantha Wishman was taken into custody and is facing charges of first-degree reckless homicide and neglecting a child – consequence is death, after the toddler died on June 15, 2023. Be aware: A crime ring is again targeting high-end homes in southeast Michigan, just as families head out of town for spring break. |

Red Wings score late for huge victory over Lightning |
Road losing streak snapped: David Perron scored with 2:40 remaining in the third period Monday to snap a tie and lift the Detroit Red Wings to a huge 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena. The Detroit Tigers broke a scoreless tie with five runs in the 10th inning to win their fourth straight game, beating the New York Mets 5-0 on Monday night at Citi Field. The Tigers (4-0) are off to their best start since 2015. Turning heads:Jake Bates nailed a 64-yard field goal from Ford Field over the weekend to give the Michigan Panthers a win in their UFL debut, so naturally, the Detroit Lions are interested in kicking the tires on the trendy kicker. The Detroit News reports the Lions are among several NFL teams to inquire about Bates’ services. |

Trout, walleye, northern pike seasons start this month; get your fishing license now |
Reel it in: It’s time to gear up for Michigan’s trout, walleye and northern pike fishing seasons, all opening later this month. Anglers need to purchase their annual license to partake in upcoming fishing opportunities. Here are some of this year’s fishing season highlights. Ride the Dune: The first signs of warm weather, including off-road vehicle season in Michigan, are here. Motorcycles, ORVs, ATVs, UTVs are now allowed back on the Silver Lake Sand Dunes at the state park in Mears. Starting off on a high: Ann Arbor’s 53rd annual Hash Bash is set to take place Saturday in the same spot it originated over half a century ago on the University of Michigan Diag. |
