In today's newsletter, Canadian wildfire smoke spreading, Lions season tickets sell out for second straight season and medieval magic returns to Michigan.

What's the weather like this week?

Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa says the weather this week might surprise you, in a good way! There are some bouts of rain to dodge this week, but not as much and as often as you may think.

Today, southern Michigan will develop scattered clumps of thundershowers. Northern Michigan should remain dry. The next widespread rain from a storm system will likely be Friday.

This leaves Wednesday and Thursday with dry weather. We will also have many more dry hours than wet hours. In fact many spots will stay entirely dry until Friday. So don’t go into this week thinking it’s an all-out rain, total washout week.

Grocery store squatter’s ordeal highlights larger housing issues, expert says

Talking about it: The viral conversation generated by a woman discovered living in a supermarket sign in Midland provides an opportunity to shed a public light on larger issues surrounding housing challenges in the region, said an expert on the matter.

“I hope people are going to look at this story and not just make this poor woman into a meme,” said Saralyn Temple, an executive director of a Midland organization that provides shelter and resources to the homeless.

Related: Despite millions of dollars funneled into homelessness programs, a total of 635 people in Kalamazoo County, including 123 kids, were counted as homeless during the 2023 annual place-in-time survey. Known by some as “tent cities,” Kalamazoo’s giant homeless encampments that hit their peak in 2021 are now gone. Kalamazoo’s homelessness problem remains a puzzle — one that’s slipped into the shadows.

The latest: Michigan’s highest court last week issued a ruling allowing the furtherance of a lawsuit that alleges three people were discriminated against as a form of indirect retaliation in the workplace.

The Michigan Supreme Court’s 7-0 ruling reversed a prior opinion by the state Court of Appeals in a lawsuit claiming the Michigan Department of Corrections fired Richard Miller and Brent Whitman because the MDOC wanted to retaliate against them.

Business news: A Michigan solar company announced it has filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy so it can reorganize its debts and provide meaningful payments to its creditors. Orbit Marketing, LLC, which does business as Climax Solar, announced in a news release it’s in this position because it placed trust in the “wrong individuals.”

Canadian wildfire smoke already spreading toward Great Lakes

The Canadian wildfire season is starting early. We already have a large plume of smoke heading our way. There are a few active large fires in southern Canada. Our upper-air flow is such that the smoke from those Canadian fires will be blown into the Midwest and eventually Michigan.

Portage tornado assessment: Sixty buildings were destroyed and another 538 were damaged by the tornado that tore through Kalamazoo County last week, preliminary damage assessments show.

Tornado aftermath: A building constructed over a century ago that functioned as a theater in the 1940s and 1950s — and later moved to a city park — is at risk of falling over, a city of Portage official said.
