It's almost hard to fathom just how deep the Great Lakes are. I mean, one could nearly swallow the Empire State Building! To put it into perspective, MLive's video team created a visual. In 2023, 85 people drowned in the Great Lakes. That’s fewer drownings than any of the last seven years. It has left experts asking: What’s the reason behind the recent reduction? On the shores of Lake Huron, a red band of paint is now visible after the restoration of the Tawas Point Lighthouse. Site Historian Laurie Perkins said the paint is from 1890. |

Michigan Central Station, once a prominent symbol of Detroit’s urban decay, has been painstakingly restored to its 1913 glory. Ford purchased the property in 2018. Six years and 3,100 skilled-trade workers dedicating more than 1.7 million combined hours later, the Station looks as close to what it looked like when it first opened 111 years ago. Gov. Whitmer announces ‘Shark Tank’ style statewide competition |
Ideas wanted: Michigan is launching a “Shark Tank” style competition to encourage entrepreneurial innovation in the state. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced the new “PitchMI” competition, where one winning startup will be awarded $100,000, during her keynote speech Thursday, May 30, at the Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island. The ruling: The Michigan Supreme Court has denied a request that it force the Board of State Canvassers to approve a ballot initiative to increase the state’s minimum wage. Take a look: Within the watershed of the Great Lakes, there are 23 nuclear power plants, four sites for mining uranium, six for uranium processing and 12 places nuclear waste is stored. Extended forecast: All of the weather data is showing a fairly dramatic upper-air pattern change taking shape. The pattern will bring cooler than normal weather to the Great Lakes region for a week to two weeks. Watch out for Wednesday: The current upper-air pattern could eventually turn into a severe-weather-maker over the Great Lakes region. A severe weather outbreak has a big picture set-up of strong winds aloft, a certain position under the jetstream and warm, humid air at the ground. Look up: Stargazers have the chance to see a somewhat unusual celestial event this week, as the Daytime Arietids — a meteor shower that largely occurs during daylight hours — reaches its annual peak. |

Did someone accidentally Venmo you money? It might be a scam. |
It seems innocent enough: Someone accidentally sends you money on Venmo and asks for it back. But don’t send the money back. That’s the warning Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel issued to Venmo users this week about an “accidental” money transfer scam. More in financial news: A program launched this year to allow for free electronic filings for certain taxpayers will be a permanent option starting in 2025. The IRS announced Thursday the Direct File option will be available for those with simple W-2s, according to the Associated Press. On the road: The state’s Department of Transportation (MDOT) has about 90 road projects scheduled to close lanes, ramps, and full segments of major roadways between Sunday, June 2, and Saturday, June 8. |

Recap: The NCAA and its Power Five conferences reached a settlement last week to end a trio of antitrust lawsuits and will reportedly pay former and current athletes $2.7 billion over 10 years. It also cleared the way for colleges to pay athletes directly in the future. Quote: “I’m into the idea of more opportunity for players,” Michigan State's Jonathan Smith said at the National College Showcase camp at Wayne State in Detroit. “I think this creates someway a path forward.” In high school sports: The MHSAA track and field state finals took place over the weekend.
