First all-female honor flight welcomed home by hundreds at Michigan airport |
Honoring their service: Coinciding with Women Veterans Day, over 200 supporters, family, and friends lined the walls at Bishop Airport in Flint on Wednesday night holding signs and American flags to welcome 150 veterans home after they completed the first all-female veteran honor flight. Bob Green, president of Mid-Michigan Honor Flight, said there are 46,000 female veterans in Michigan. Less than 1% of those veterans have been on an honor flight. The goal of Mission 19 was to improve that statistic and honor women who have not been previously recognized. Recognized: Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officer Christina Ellis and OutFront Kalamazoo’s Director of Services Dell Darnell were recently selected to be awarded at this year’s upcoming National Diversity Council virtual LGBTQ+ Unity Summit. |

Unanimous Supreme Court preserves access to widely used abortion medication |
The Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously preserved access to mifepristone, a medication that was used in nearly two-thirds of all abortions in the U.S. last year, in the court’s first abortion decision since conservative justices overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago. Campaign: Former president and 2024 Republican candidate Donald Trump will add a visit to 180 Church in Detroit during his weekend stop in Michigan, officials said. Trump will also participate in The People's Convention at the Huntington Place in downtown Detroit. Also in politics: A Republican state lawmaker is pushing to grow the list of state symbols for Michigan to include the semiautomatic rifle frequently at the heart of debate around gun control. |

Michigan gray wolf population at 14-year high, DNR estimates |
Michigan’s gray wolf numbers are on the rise in the Upper Peninsula but state scientists said the population is stable. The recent winter wolf survey found an estimated 762 wolves in the U.P., an increase of 131 animals over the last survey two years ago. This is the largest estimated number of federally protected wolves in the U.P. since 2012 No charges: Nearly six months after a rare gray wolf was killed in an unexpected area of southern Michigan, a hunter who shot the animal will not face charges, according to a report from the Associated Press. A family-owned wildlife park in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula will celebrate its 30th anniversary on Saturday, June 15, at the zoo. Gary and Lynn Moore founded GarLyn Zoo Wildlife Park in 1994. The celebration will include food, face painting, glitter tattoos, a bounce house and more. |

Rare synthetic opioid ‘krokodil’ that turns skin green, scaly found in southeast Michigan |
Drugs: A synthetic opioid that turns skin green and scaly was recently found in St. Clair County for the first time, FOX 2 Detroit reports. Krokodil is a cheap substitute for heroin and it approximately 10 times more potent than morphine, the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. In Grand Rapids: A Southwest Michigan man was sentenced to a decade in prison for possession of meth, which he planned to press into pills and sell, according to U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Mark Totten. Also in crime: A 22-year-old man suspected of critically injuring two senior citizens in a hit-and-run crash has been charged with two counts of attempted murder. |

Michigan getting its first multi-projection theater with immersive side screens |
On screen: You will no longer be limited to a single screen while watching a movie at this theater. MJR Theater is teaming up with CJ 4DPLEX to bring the state’s first ScreenX theater to the MJR in Waterford. ScreenX offers moviegoers a 270-degree panoramic view of the film they are watching. Heritage: Iron your kilt, the third annual Holland Celtic Festival is back. The festival celebrating Irish and Scottish heritage starts Friday, June 21, with a cèilidh or céilí, depending on your native tongue. The party starts with music and beer for an adults-only party in the pub tent. Live music: Top of the Park is a free summer concert series hosted by the Ann Arbor Summer Festival that kicks off on Friday, June 14, at Ingalls Mall. The festival runs until Sunday, June 30, and will bring a variety of musical artists, art exhibitions, food vendors, street performers and family-friendly activities. |
