‘Exceedingly rare’ fungal disease identified in 35 U.P. mill workers |
Health officials have identified 35 cases of blastomycosis, a rare fungal disease, among people who work at the Billerud Paper Mill in Escanaba. So far, all the cases of blastomycosis are among mill workers, although a causal link between the disease and Billerud Paper Mill has not been established. About the disease: Blastomycosis, which most often infects the lungs, is a disease that grows in moist soil and decomposing matter such as wood and leaves. It can be contracted by breathing in fungal spores from the air. It is not contagious from person to person or between people and animals. In the Lower Peninsula: Border agents in Detroit recently made a surprising discovery in the luggage of a traveler from the African nation of Ghana - 6 "highly invasive" Giant African Snails. |

A discovery: Jamie Hall knew she had been conceived through artificial insemination. But what she didn't know is despite her mother hand-selecting a donor to be Hall’s biological father, the man who’d actually fathered her was Dr. Philip Peven. What happened: Peven, who died in May 2022 at the age of 105, had been using his own sperm for decades as part of fertility treatments for couples having difficulties conceiving. Hall said he was very matter of fact about the issue when she was able to confront him prior to his death. More in public interest: At the Michigan State University Museum, staff members are already thinking about how an exhibit or exhibits might bear witness to Feb. 13 shootings. |

Michigan’s orphaned baby bears: Surrogate moms, scented-gel tricks and cute cubs |
Helping lone cubs: Each year, the DNR monitors a handful of mother bears that they can use as surrogates if they have orphaned cubs to re-home in the spring and summer. This year, they answered questions about process and shared photos including the one you saw above of a lil cub staying warm.
Bird watching made easier: A new osprey nesting platform is standing tall in the Upper Peninsula near prime hunting waters and within easy view of birdwatchers. Also from the DNR: Snowmobiling deaths in Michigan are up by nearly 40% compared to last year. |

Washtenaw County: The boyfriend of a Jackson High School teacher found dead in an Ypsilanti-area apartment last week has been charged in her death. Muskegon: Restrictions on pit bull ownership, including having to walk them with a muzzle, warning others with a “Beware of Dog” sign and obtaining liability insurance, have been deleted from Muskegon’s dangerous animals ordinance in a move to destigmatize the popular breed. Jackson: Meet Betty Morris, a 97-year-old woman who's been going to the Jackson YMCA almost every day for 30 years. |
