Morning Briefing

FRIDAY, APRIL 21, 2023

In today's newsletter, half of Senate GOP votes to keep Michigan’s 92-year-old ban on unmarried cohabitation, Detroit Lions dump Pepsi and partner with Coca-Cola as pop provider at Ford Field, and Michigan airport lands in top 10 for best airport food in the entire country.

Happy Friday!

Finally, the weekend is in sight. Let's kick off this newsletter with the upcoming weather. It will be cooler with some showers around the state, Mark dives deeper into the forecast here. If you want to really look ahead, the May forecast was just issued.

Looking for advice on when it's safe to plant tomatoes and peppers in Michigan? Some say never plant before Memorial Day, others use Mother’s Day. Mark says every year is different and he has some safe dates for you.

Also happening this weekend is the season’s first meteor shower, the Lyrids, giving stargazers the chance to keep their eyes peeled for spring “shooting stars.”

DNR extends search for mysterious U.P. roadside water source

Where's it coming from? The state of Michigan is extending its search for the source of water in an unusual old roadside well in the western Upper Peninsula.

Can't confirm it's safe: The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says it will search anew this spring for the origin of water at a makeshift filling station in Ontonagon County which state environmental regulators ordered to be shut down.

Speaking of water: A study has confirmed that Michiganders who drank water contaminated with PFAS chemicals in Kent and Kalamazoo counties have higher-than-average levels of the contaminants in their blood serum.

‘I feel terrible,’ MillerKnoll CEO says after employee bonus rant goes viral

Saying sorry: The CEO of furniture company MillerKnoll has apologized to workers after a video of her telling employees worried about not getting bonuses to “leave pity city” went viral.

What happened: Andi Owen, who has led the Zeeland-based company since 2018, told employees during an online townhall meeting in March to focus on reaching MillerKnoll’s $26 million sales goal rather than whether they will get bonuses. She told them to leave “pity city” and concentrate on their jobs.

More in business: 129 years later, Frankenmuth Woolen Mill is a "working piece of history."

Half of Senate GOP votes to keep Michigan’s 92-year-old ban on unmarried cohabitation

Wanting to keep it: Michigan’s senators voted Wednesday to repeal a nearly century-old law prohibiting unwed men and women from living together – a move half of all Republicans in the chamber objected.

New voting law: The Michigan Senate passed a bill Wednesday to give military members and their families more time to return absentee ballots. Also, see youth voter turnout by state for the last three midterm elections here.

Political public figures: Michigan Gov. Whitmer drinks beer and talks politics on “The Daily Show”, Peter Meijer says political violence is abhorrent toward democratic process, and Bernie Sanders offers his support to striking University of Michigan graduate instructors.

Michigan airport lands in top 10 for best airport food in the entire country

What's the deal with airline food?: People flying in and out of Michigan’s biggest airport have plenty of solid food choices. The selections are so good, in fact, that Food and Wine has just listed Detroit Metro Airport as having the 10th best airport food in the country.

Yummy: According to a recent list compiled by the food website Taste Atlas, seven of the top 10 coney dogs in the United States are in Michigan. That’s no surprise. What is a bit surprising is that No. 1 is elsewhere.

Have to try it: Metzger’s German Restaurant has a cocktail that doubles as a delectable dessert.
