Michigan high schools are desperate for refs, but the job has been rough on women. |
'You grow thick skin:'As sports nears the 50th anniversary of the federal Title IX legislation that was designed to increase opportunities for women in sport, just 12 percent of all high school officials in Michigan are women. Referee Nichole Dowdall said: "There should be more female officials, but we can say the same about officials overall without looking at gender. “The pay stinks, there’s disrespect from the fans and disrespect from the coaches. I really wish I had the answer."
