Michigan counties with the highest percentage of adult cigarette smokers |
Map: More than 26% of adults in Lake and Clare counties currently smoke cigarettes, making those the highest counties in Michigan for percentage of smokers in 2022. Oakland and Washtenaw reported the lowest percentage of adult smokers at a little more than 13%. See all the counties here. The data, part of an annual report from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that tracks health factor outcomes across the country points to rural versus urban counties as an indicator of smoking prevalence. What is the 5-day ‘quiet period’ before Michigan’s firearm deer season? |
Throughout the state, hunters are preparing stands, blinds and camps for the upcoming firearm deer season, which begins Nov. 15. That means there’s understandable excitement as hunters prepare to hit the woods, but officials are reminding hunters that they must respect the “quiet period,” which takes place Nov. 10-14. During these five days, it is unlawful to transport or possess a rifle or shotgun with buckshot, slug load, ball load or cut shell in an area frequented by deer. Unloaded firearms securely encased or carried in the trunk of a vehicle may be transported to or from a hunting camp. 10 tips to avoid violations: To help ensure everyone has a safe season, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has released its annual list of the 10 best practices for hunters to remember. |

Whitmer signs bills expanding protections and services for crime victims |
A change: Crime victims can have their identities blurred in law enforcement evidence and court proceeding and be connected with social service under a package of bills signed into law by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Launching in: The first batch of state climate corps members are expected to fan out across Michigan in the spring to help communities advance state decarbonization goals. More in politics: Two former members of Hamtramck’s Human Relations Commission filed suit in federal court alleging the city’s recent ban of flying ethnic, political and LGBTQ Pride flags on city property is unconstitutional. |

Perfect attendance! Detroit Lions at full strength coming out of bye week |
A great spot: The Lions held their first practice since the bye week on Tuesday, and all 53 players were participating in the workout during the 20 minutes available to reporters. Plus, the Lions have the second-best record in the NFC and the easiest remaining schedule of the top contenders. Across the street: Spencer Torkelson has been named the Tiger of the Year by the Detroit chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. In college sports: Michigan State lost another commit from its next recruiting class. He is the fifth 2024 recruit to decommit from Michigan State since coach Mel Tucker was suspended and then fired for cause. |

Wintry mix expected in Northern Michigan and U.P. today |
After some calm weather, rain and snow are going to move into northern Lower Michigan and the eastern Upper Peninsula this morning, potentially causing some headaches for the morning commute.
Did you see any?On Monday, a rare November hailstorm produced ping pong ball-sized hail from southwest of Traverse City to around Muskegon and the Grand Rapids area. Look up: The late-autumn night sky has some lovely treasures in store for stargazers, including multiple meteor showers, a brilliant pre-dawn face-off between bright planets Venus and Jupiter, and Saturn floating in a sea of water-themed constellations. |
