There is good reason to hope!
In today's newsletter, Michigan’s largest egg producer laying off 400 people, way-too-early Detroit Lions game predictions and have grades become meaningless? |
What are your plans for the weekend? |
I always love a good excuse to travel to Frankenmuth, and the annual World Expo of Beer is the perfect event to get me in the car. The alcohol-centric festival is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 17-18, at Frankemuth’s Heritage Park. Going somewhere else? Here's where construction will close roads this weekend across the state. Before diving into the news, I'd like to highlight our MLive journalists who took home 34 awards, including 11 first-place awards, at the Society of Professional Journalists Detroit Excellence in Journalism Awards. Fabulous work! |

Could last weekend’s dazzling Northern Lights show happen again? |
She may dance again: If you missed last weekend’s crazy northern lights, you might still be in luck. There is good reason to hope this situation happens again soon since we are still heading toward the peak of this current sunspot cycle. Hear from an expert astronomer here. An update: Roughly an hour after Portage residents began assessing damage from an EF2 tornado on May 7, phones and sirens rang out with a second tornado warning. It was suspected a second tornado was on the ground. But whether there was a second tornado in Portage is “unlikely” to be confirmed at this point, a National Weather Service meteorologist said. The weekend weather will be really close to feeling like summer for many of us. As far as rainfall goes, you can call it a dry weekend. |

Michigan’s largest egg producer laying off 400 people after bird flu outbreak |
Mass layoff: Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch, the biggest egg producer in Michigan, is laying off nearly half its staff after its flock was infected with the highly pathogenic avian influenza. It will impact hourly, salaried and contract workers throughout Ionia County. Filed earlier this month in federal court: A northern Michigan marine dock is suing the defense contractor Lockheed Martin, alleging that a 388-foot combat ship caused more than $2.5 million in damages to the facility’s seawall, dock and the surrounding lakebed. The latest: Grand Rapids has submitted a revised permit application for the scaled-back project to restore the Grand River’s rapids downtown. |

Have grades become meaningless as A’s become the norm at University of Michigan and other schools? |
The majority of grades given to undergraduates at the University of Michigan in the fall of 2022 were A’s, more than 74% when you include A pluses and A minuses. In fact, every public university in Michigan has seen its share of grades in the A range (or their numerical equivalents) shoot up over the past decade, according to grade data obtained by MLive. While we're on campus: Four pro-Palestinian protesters were charged on accusations of assaulting police during the November “sit-in” at University of Michigan President Santa Ono’s office. Can resources keep up?: As Kalamazoo reckons with its downtown vision — with hopes of new residents and crowds of visitors around a planned $300 million arena — it must also address what deters people from downtown Kalamazoo right now: the homelessness problem. |
