The search for PFAS contamination in Michigan mostly has been focused on old factory sites, military bases or where fire fighting foam is known to have been used. However, an MLive investigation revealed that manufacturing businesses across the state are sending high volumes of these "forever chemicals" daily into wastewater systems that eventually discharge into the state's lakes and rivers. While state officials are on the forefront nationally in terms of testing for PFAS, there are few regulations - either nationally or at the state level - to curb the spread of PFAS. As such, after a year of testing in Michigan, not one known high-level polluter has yet to reduce its PFOS discharge to target levels.
