In today's newsletter, how proposals 1 and 2 will impact Michigan, a look at the very interesting history of the Michigan Stadium tunnel and a man who was paralyzed has a message to share for hunting season.

A big thank you on Veteran's Day to all Michiganders who served.

It's Veterans Day. Today we applaud all the Americans who served in the Armed Forces. There are different ways our communities do that. For example, in Grand Rapids, a parade is scheduled for tonight at 6 p.m. It's one of several events planned in West Michigan.

Near Kalamazoo, the Air Zoo is having a veterans breakfast and then all vets can stay and enjoy the museum for free. In Jackson County, you can attend a celebration of veterans in a community park. And over in Ann Arbor, University of Michigan will hold a veteran and military appreciation lunch.

Speaking of food, no veteran should pay for a meal today. Seriously, so many restaurants offer free food today to those who have served. Go enjoy some grub on the house. You deserve it. Thank you for your service.

Let's take a look inside Michigan Democrats' 'once in a lifetime' midterm win.

Suprisingly victorious: There weren’t many in the party or top campaigns, according to multiple sources, who were confident Democrats would be this successful, with a broad feeling that the political climate was working against them. But they’ve emerged poised to control of all three branches of state government in 2023.

Pollster Richard Czuba said: "In what should be a historically bad year for Democrats, this was one of those rare elections where a counter-wave was created in a midterm. It’s kind of a once in a generation phenomenon when you have a midterm where it’s not just 'throw out the party in power.'"

A historic moment: Democratic state Rep. Joe Tate made history Thursday after he was selected to lead the Michigan House of Representatives in the upcoming 102nd Legislature as the first Black person ever to do so.

Inflation finally eased up, dropping to 7.7% in October.

A look at rent, gas and food : U.S. consumer prices climbed 7.7% in a year from October to October, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported, down from 8.2% in September. This is the lowest annual rate since January. Here's a look at where prices are now.

A mixed grocery bag: The latest price index for food at home shows a monthly increase of 0.4% – the smallest jump since December 2021. Items like fresh fruits and vegetables dropped in cost last month while prices for meat, poultry, eggs, cereals and bakery products went up.

Here are 5 longterm impacts Proposals 1 and 2 could have on Michigan.

Overwhelming support: Michigan voters overwhelmingly approved Proposals 1 and 2 on the ballot Nov. 8 – signaling their desire for more government transparency and voting access.

Proposal 1 requires annual financial disclosures from the governor, attorney general, secretary of state and legislators and restricts term limits in the Legislature to 12 total years.

Proposal 2 solidifies voting rights, including nine days of early voting, allowing people to sign an affidavit to vote if they forgot their ID, requiring absentee drop boxes, only allowing election officials to conduct post-election audits and requiring canvass boards to only certify results based on official records of votes cast.

The tunnel everyone is talking about: Recently, talk of sandwich throwing and suspended players has made the Michigan Stadium tunnel the main focus of Michigan sports news. And while there has been a lot of action in the tunnel this season, it isn't the first time a fight has ensued inside.

Back in 1969, what sounds like a very involved brawl broke out inside that very same tunnel. We have some first-hand details and a lot more on the tunnel in this really intriguing piece by Andrew Kahn.

Speaking of Michigan football: Nebraska’s chances of pulling off an upset at Michigan on Saturday appear to have taken a hit. Cornhuskers interim coach Mickey Joseph said Thursday that starting quarterback Casey Thompson will miss his second straight game because of injury.

This man was paralyzed during a hunting trip and he wants to warn you about safety precautions.

A life-changing accident: In September 2018, Dave Gier fell from a tree stand while preparing for archery season in Hillsdale County. The fall damaged his brain and spine. It left him paralyzed from the waist down.

His warning for others: Gier wasn’t wearing a harness hooked into a rope system, and he urges hunters, heading to the woods Tuesday for the start of firearm deer season, not to take the same risk. "Be careful and put a safety belt on."
