Check out these Michigan museums ranked among the best in the entire country |
We already knew Michigan's museums were something special. Now, USA Today's annual 10Best Competition agrees. For the top music museum, the Motown Museum, home of Hittsville, U.S.A., came out at number 5. They were just behind the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Michigan Science Center also got a top spot for the top science museum. Finishing in one spot higher than last year, they ranked 3rd this time. And coming in first for the best art museum in the entire country, is the Detroit Institute of Arts. “We couldn’t be prouder of our museum, our amazing team, and the community we serve,” a statement reads on the DIA’s Facebook page.

Another ice storm is coming to Michigan today |
Here we go again: Just days after an ice storm knocked out power to more than 700,000 homes and businesses across southern Michigan, another heavy ice event will take aim at a different part of the state today. The National Weather Service forecast said this time, the incoming storm will target an area to the north of last week’s storm zone. A wintry mix:Rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow are all on the table for the Lower Peninsula. Where each band of that precipitation falls will depend on the temperature at the time this storm rolls in. In the Upper Peninsula, several inches of snow are expected, falling from early Monday to early Tuesday. Here's when and where driving is expected to be hazardous.

Houses are staying on the market longer as home sales cool. |
January data shows home sales in Michigan continue to cool compared to where they were in the last few years. Realcomp, a Michigan real estate data company, reports home sales are down almost 30% year-over-year. With sales slowing, days on the market are up to 43. These 31 Michigan cities have more renters than homeowners: The U.S. Census Bureau has five-year estimates from 2021 showing the breakdown of renters versus owners by community. Here’s what the data shows. Also in public interest: Shipments of hazardous waste from an Ohio train derailment to a Michigan facility have been halted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency following outcry from local, state and federal officials. |

Murder convictions vacated after man spends 22 years in Michigan prison |
No longer an inmate: Jeff Titus walked out of prison Friday after nearly 22 years of incarceration for a double murder conviction that happened without the disclosure of “powerful” evidence. Undisclosed evidence in the trial: Titus, now 71, was convicted in 2002 of fatally shooting two hunters in Kalamazoo County in 1990. Titus has always maintained his innocence and recently discovered evidence shows the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office had about 30 pages documenting an alternative suspect – convicted serial killer Thomas Dillon. More in crime: A Traverse City man who authorities say used a police shield to push back against police during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot has pleaded guilty to a charge carrying a potential five years in prison. |

DNR tracks down deer and bear poachers: What happens to all that meat? |
Getting fed: When meat is confiscated from poachers in Michigan, it doesn’t go to waste. Conservation officers scramble to put it to good use, going down their contact lists to find someone or some place in need, often at unpredictable and inconvenient times. Read their stories here. Speaking of hunting: Michigan’s data collection methods changed in 2022 for how it calculates the number of deer killed by hunters. See which counties bagged the most deer in 2022. Now onto cars: Greg Haliday brought his meticulously restored 1941 Willys Coupe to the 70th annual Meguiar’s Detroit Autorama all the way from New Zealand, but the trip didn't go as planned.
