The Gordie Howe International Bridge will connect to a 17,000 mile trail |
From the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority: When it’s all said and done, the modern marvel known as the Gordie Howe International Bridge will become the first international bridge border crossing to connect to a more than 17,000 mile trail network in Canada. Not only that, the bridge, which is scheduled to be complete in September 2025, will also have dedicated lanes which will allow people to walk or bike across, toll-free. That will make it easy for people to use the trail system. Speaking of transportation: Drivers can expect delays on U.S. 131 in the Grand Rapids area when a road project begins later this month that will cause closures along the highway. In politics: Nikki Haley will suspend her presidential campaign after being soundly defeated across the country on Super Tuesday, according to people familiar with her decision, leaving Donald Trump as the last remaining major candidate for the 2024 Republican nomination. |

New data gives snapshot of who Ann Arbor’s guaranteed-income program is helping |
Background: One hundred low-income residents in Ann Arbor are now receiving monthly payments of $528 under the city’s new guaranteed-income program. Demographic data released by Poverty Solutions on Tuesday gives an initial snapshot of who the program is helping. While over three quarters of Ann Arbor residents have at least a bachelor’s degree, 55% of program participants do not. And while less than 7% of Ann Arbor’s population is Black, 39% of program participants identify as Black, while 41% are white and 20% are listed as other races, the data shows. More in Ann Arbor: Some 40 years after it was first discovered, a plume of toxic pollution covering a large swath of the Ann Arbor area is officially on its way to joining a list of the nation’s most seriously contaminated sites. |

Weekend storm is one to watch, might bring some snow to Michigan |
March storms are tricky: Since this winter hasn’t had much snow, a weekend storm is one to watch. It’s a storm system that will become a large storm over the northeast U.S. By Sunday and Monday most of the Northeast will be in the precipitation area of this storm. It’s actually going to be two storms merging into one storm Sunday. For the warmth fans: March can be a really wicked month of weather here in Michigan. While many of the days have winter written all over them, there are also some very encouraging spring aspects. Garden experts typically have one message right about now: Be patient, even if — like this year — we get an early warm-up. Make the most of this transitional season by finalizing your 2024 garden vision and making a game plan for the planting to come, when it’s truly time. Here are a few ideas for what to get done this month. |

"You gotta lose with class": Nick Saban told longtime college football reporter Chris Low that the Rose Bowl loss was a tough one to take, not only because of the way his team played, but also how some of the players reacted in the locker room and back in Tuscaloosa in player meetings. Mock draft: Free agency is sure to shake things up heading into the draft, but with the combine now in the books, some clarity is starting to emerge around how things might play out. How a Michigan beach town became home to a highly-decorated WWII submarine |
The nation’s most famous surviving WWII submarine: An 82-year-old piece of storied World War II history calls the Muskegon Lake channel home thanks to strong community support and the formation of a new museum. The USS Silversides fought in the war from April 1942 to July 1945. In 1985, residents of Muskegon started a campaign to get the decorated submarine to their home port. In August 1987, that became reality. In crime: Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is warning residents of ongoing scams conducted by people who are targeting those who have recently lost a loved one. |
