Abortion increases in 45 counties lead Michigan to 27-year high

The latest data: Michigan reported 30,120 abortions last year, which was up 0.2% from 2021 and marked the highest one-year total since 1995, according to annual data recently published by the Department of Health and Human Services.

 

While the statewide total was up, the rate of abortions per 1,000 females age 15 to 44 actually declined.

 

Seeking care: The number of out-of-state patients traveling to Michigan to obtain an abortion increased 66% in 2022 from the year prior as the topic became a nationwide point of debate with the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Hearing to determine if Michigan school shooter will get life in prison viewable online

Prosecutors this week are scheduled to begin making their case for why Ethan Crumbley, a 15-year-old sophomore at Oxford High School in November 2021 when he killed four classmates, deserves to spend the remainder of his life in prison. The hearing is expected to last at least two days and will be viewable online by the public at this link. 

 

Weighing decisions: Ann Arbor is once again considering restricting police use of a facial-recognition technology and city officials are planning to vote on the issue soon.

A few tornadoes, damaging wind gusts possible in next severe storm round for Michigan

Storm watch: The next clump of thunderstorms is expected to roll across Lower Michigan Wednesday and possibly produce more damaging weather. Here are the Storm Prediction Center’s early morning forecasts for damaging wind gusts, tornadoes and large hail.

 

Heating up: The recent plentiful sunshine and light winds have paid off, as water surface temperatures continue to rise this week. Water temperatures are hitting mid-70s at some Great Lakes beaches.

Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh could face 4-game suspension over NCAA probe

Facing consequences: Jim Harbaugh has reportedly accepted a four-game suspension this fall as part of a negotiated agreement between Michigan and the NCAA over false statements made to investigators, according to Yahoo! Sports.

 

More in college football: The Michigan football team is the preseason favorite to capture its third straight Big Ten championship in 2023.

 

Tuesday's game: The Detroit Tigers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth before losing 7-6 to the Los Angeles Angels in 10 innings at Comerica Park.
