Michigan orchards rely on migrants to pick apples. But wages keep going up. |
Wanting change: The visa program that enables migrants to work in the United States has increased wages by nearly 18%. Now apple growers, farmers and a Michigan congressman are pushing for a temporary freeze on agricultural wages. The numbers: The Adverse Effect Wage Rate has jumped 28%, or about $4 an hour, for Michigan farmers since 2019. Last year alone, the Michigan rate went from $15.37 to $17.34 an hour. More in public interest: Michigan’s first cases of mosquito-borne viral diseases this year were found in two different horses, health officials said. |

Get out there: Pure Michigan has put together a string of good travel deals for September. There’s a mix of hotel savings, a few resort packages, an urban adventure or two - even a couple Mackinac Island deals. On the road: A party bus that stops at thrift stores? Its next destination is West Michigan. |
