Michigan orchards rely on migrants to pick apples. But wages keep going up.

Wanting change: The visa program that enables migrants to work in the United States has increased wages by nearly 18%. Now apple growers, farmers and a Michigan congressman are pushing for a temporary freeze on agricultural wages.

 

The numbers: The Adverse Effect Wage Rate has jumped 28%, or about $4 an hour, for Michigan farmers since 2019. Last year alone, the Michigan rate went from $15.37 to $17.34 an hour.

Weather forecast for the upcoming days

Grab an umbrella: Today will be rainy but we'll see more dry time than wet time with off-and-on showers at any time. Wednesday will be the last day of Michigan being under the influence of this storm system.
