Need to know: The legislature has left Lansing for the rest of the year, so it’s time for a look back at what they did with the first year under Democratic control in the past four decades. Here are 10 pieces of legislation to know from 2023. End of the term: U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, a Flint Township Democrat who carried on a family tradition of serving in Congress, will not seek re-election in 2024. He says his cancer diagnosis earlier this year helped him come to the decision. Informant: An unidentified source aided prosecutors in providing information regarding a plot by supporters of former President Donald Trump to seize and tamper with voting machine tabulators in the wake of the 2020 elections, according to recent Oakland County Circuit Court filings. |

GM UAW ratifies contract with 54.7% approval rating, five Michigan plants vote against |
Slim margin: General Motors UAW members voted in favor of the tentative agreement by 54.74%, marking the first United Auto Workers contract to be ratified since workers came off the picket line last month. Car crime: There were six reports of attempts to steal vehicles on Thursday, Nov. 16 across Ann Arbor, police said. Some attempts were successful while others failed. Here are the details on each attempt, according to police. On the road: Colder temperatures are upon us, meaning fewer road construction projects getting underway throughout the state. Still, the Michigan Department of Transportation construction schedule features another 38 closures scheduled for Friday, Nov. 17, through Sunday, Nov. 19. |

Up North weekend forecast: Rainy, windy start with a dry finish |
In the U.P.: We’re going to see some rain showers move through the U.P. and northern Lower Michigan early Friday morning as a strong cold front makes its way across the state. Here's a look at this weekend's forecast. Looking at space: A program highlighting the current evening sky is coming to the Delta College Planetarium. The Jupiter-Saturn show starts at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at the planetarium’s Dome360 Theatre in downtown Bay City, and will feature insights on observing these planetary giants. Great outdoors: The Leelanau Conservancy recently announced that it has the opportunity to expand the popular natural area by purchasing an 80-acre parcel of mature hardwood forest at the heart of its 1,075-acre Palmer Woods Forest Reserve in Maple City. |

Case closed: The University of Michigan and football coach Jim Harbaugh have agreed to withdraw their case in court and accept a three-game suspension levied by the Big Ten Conference, it was announced Thursday afternoon. In the pool: The top high school girls swimmers and divers from across the lower peninsula of Michigan will compete for championships this weekend at the Michigan High School Athletic Association state finals. Here are some of the key things to know heading into this weekend’s action. Game day: Despite boasting a 7-2 record and leading the NFC North, the Detroit Lions have faced challenges this season against mobile quarterbacks. This Sunday at Ford Field, they encounter another test as they host the Chicago Bears, with Justin Fields returning to action. |

Holiday cheer: Crystal Mountain is getting festive with a special First Light and Holiday Trail Celebration kicking off the day after Thanksgiving. It will feature Santa arriving in a horse-drawn surrey to light the resort’s big Christmas tree, and a holiday sing-along. Fun for all: Grand Rapid's first-ever European style Christkindl Markt will officially open to the public on Friday.Along with a wide variety of custom-built vendor booths full of handmade Christmas gifts, the Christkindl Markt also features a beer hall, European food, curling lessons, a s’mores station and indoor children’s activities. Dog-friendly : Old Town Saginaw will serve as a festive runway for during a dog-centric, “ugly sweater” parade which coincides with the 2023 Holidays in the Heart of the City celebration on Friday, Nov. 17. |
