Staying safe, staying prepared |
This week marks Michigan’s Severe Weather Awareness Week (March 17-23) and officials are encouraging people to get prepared. From emergency weather kits to understanding the difference between a tornado watch or warning, here's what you need to know about staying safe during tornadoes. The Michigan State Police’s Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) is organizing a voluntary statewide tornado drill for today, Wednesday, at 1 p.m. The drill gives Michiganders a chance to build a tornado plan and put it to the test before severe weather occurs, according to Capt. Kevin Sweeney, deputy state director of Emergency Management and commander of the MSP/EMHSD. |

1 in 7 Michigan adults has kidney disease. Too few know until it’s too late. |
In health: More than 1 million Michigan adults are living with chronic kidney disease—and most of them don’t know it. While detection isn’t difficult or expensive, it can be overlooked if patients aren't getting checkups or blood and urine testing done through their doctor. The risk:When kidneys aren’t working properly, it can lead to other health problems including heart disease and stroke. Left untreated, chronic kidney disease can lead to kidney failure, which then requires a machine to filter the blood outside the body in a treatment known as dialysis. Get tested: March is National Kidney Month and Flint-area residents can take advantage of a free health screening this week. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, free kidney health screenings will be offered at a Health and Wellness Expo at the Flint Farmers’ Market. |

$600M lawsuit blaming environmental racism on factory, government is dismissed |
A judge has dismissed a federal lawsuit that blamed government and company officials for air pollution and environmental racism in Kalamazoo. The city’s wastewater treatment plant and Graphic Packaging’s paper mill are documented sources of toxic hydrogen sulfide gas, which can be harmful if exposed to long-term. Energy: Solar farms covering hundreds or even thousands of acres are in the pipeline across Michigan, and rural Washtenaw County is no exception. But area residents are raising concerns about preserving farmland. Speaking of land: The non-profit Leelanau Conservancy recently announced that 20 acres have been added to its Stites Natural Area in Suttons Bay, expanding it to a total of 70 acres. |

Brother of Congressman Dan Kildee killed, suspect in custody |
Timothy Kildee, brother of U.S. Rep Dan Kildee, was shot and killed in his Vienna Township home on Tuesday, March 19. The suspect, a 27-year-old family member, is in custody at a local hospital while recovering from injuries sustained in a crash that occurred minutes after the alleged shooting, according to Genesee County law enforcement officials. In court: David Rosenberg, the former Director of the Lansing Catholic Diocese’s St. Francis Retreat Center in DeWitt, convicted of embezzling an estimated $780,000 from three retired priests was sentenced to prison on Monday. In Washtenaw County: A man charged with destroying the body of an Ypsilanti-area woman killed in 2022 has taken a plea deal in exchange for testimony against his codefendant. |

Lions’ Amon-Ra St. Brown selected to star in new Netflix series |
Show time: Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon St. Brown will star in a new eight-episode series called “Receiver” that drops this summer on Netflix. St. Brown will appear alongside fellow great pass-catchers like Raiders receiver Davante Adams, Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson, 49ers tight end George Kittle and 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel. Made in Michigan:Connor Sports, a production mill in the small Upper Peninsula town of Amasa, has once again has provided new, made-in-Michigan custom hardwood courts for the NCAA Tournament. The mill in Iron County has been the official court supplier of the NCAA Final Four since 2006. High school basketball: Junior forward Cora Williams made the defensive play of the year Tuesday night to send Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard’s girls basketball team to the Division 2 state semifinals for the first time since 1993. |

‘Love is Blind’ looking for Michigan singles, casting for next season on Netflix |
Ready to mingle: The popular Netflix reality dating show "Love is Blind" is casting singles in Michigan for the next season of the hit Netflix dating series. Michiganders looking to possibly be on the show can take part in the online casting process here by answering a questionnaire, submitting headshot, social media pages and a 15-second video. Have a laugh: Gabriel "Fluffy Hernandez, a popular stand-up comedian known for using characters and sound effects in his storytelling will take the stage Friday, July 5, at the National Cherry Festival in Traverse City. Last time: It looks like this is it for another legendary music artist. Jeff Lynne’s ELO has announced the band’s final tour, which will bring them to Michigan one last time on Wednesday, Oct. 9. |
