| Good morning. Sunny skies are ahead, but the temperature is a bit on the chilly side. We can expect highs around mid-20s to lower 30s through the state. Find out more from Updraft. Minnesota health officials reported more than 23,000 new COVID-19 cases and 203 deaths over the long holiday weekend. That included a single-day record of 101 deaths from COVID-19 — deaths reported to state officials last Wednesday, and included in Friday’s update from the Department of Health. Averaged over the past week, the test positivity rate is continuing on a downward trend. It’s now at 10.2 percent — a significant drop from earlier in the month, though still well above the 5 percent threshold that state officials have said is cause for concern. Here are Minnesota’s current COVID-19 statistics: 3,578 deaths (57 new)312,969 positive cases (8,953 new); 265,223 off isolation4.2 million tests, 2.5 million people tested (about 42 percent of the population)10.2 percent seven-day testing rate (officials find 5 percent concerning)Three people, including a police officer, were wounded by gunfire in Albert Lea early Sunday, prompting several SWAT teams from around the region to respond to what authorities called an "active shooter" situation at an eight-story apartment building. Authorities announced just after 11 a.m. that a 21-year-old male suspect had been arrested after an hours-long standoff. According to police, an officer responded to a report of fireworks or shots fired just after 2 a.m. Sunday and was ambushed by the suspect. The suspect fired multiple rounds, striking the officer in the chest and hitting the squad car. The 30-year-old police officer was treated and released. Two other men, ages 38 and 52, were wounded by gunfire and transported first to Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea. The 52-year-old man was transferred to Rochester. Authorities said both men’s injuries were not life-threatening. A St. Paul police officer shot a man being sought in connection with a domestic assault Saturday night. The wounded man was reported to be in stable condition at Regions Hospital early Sunday. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating. According to police, officers were looking for a man in connection with a domestic assault and vehicle crash at about 8 p.m. near the intersection of Rice Street and Maryland Avenue. Three members of the Minneapolis city council are proposing a budget shift of nearly $8 million from the police department to alternative public safety programs. The $7.9 million budget amendment written by Council President Lisa Bender, and council members Phillipe Cunningham and Steve Fletcher, would redirect some non-emergency calls to other departments, fund a non-police 911 mental health crisis response program, and expand the existing Violence Prevention Program. The proposal comes in the wake of widespread calls for police reform following the killing of George Floyd, and as the city also is seeing a significant spike in gun violence. 🎧 Tune in and stay informed. Here's what's coming up on MPR News today. -- Matt Mikus, MPR News (@mikusmatt) |
