Good morning, and welcome to the Wednesday, May 8 edition of the Saints Insider newsletter. This is one of the slower weeks of the year in Saints land. The draft is completed, the Saints' rookie minicamp doesn't start until next week and the NFL's 2024 schedule release is a week away. Other than the offseason conditioning program, there's not a whole lot going on. But we always manage to produce compelling content on the Saints beat. Mocking the Saints' scheduleWith that in mind, beat writer Matthew Paras decided to spice things up with a mock schedule, his attempt at guessing the Saints' 2024 schedule. The actualy schedule will be released on May 16. So we'll have a week to contemplate whether Matt was right or wrong. The over/under on how correct games/dates is 1.5. If he somehow manages to correctly guess more, then he might want to consider a career switch to fortune telling in Jackson Square. A sneak peek at Steve Gleason's bookSteve Gleason wasn't supposed to make it in the NFL. He was an undersized, undrafted free agent linebacker from Washington State, who Jim Mora cut in training camp as a rookie. But the snub only fueled Gleason, who eventually landed with the Saints and forged an 8-year NFL career, in which he made one of the most iconic plays in NFL history. Gleason details his unlikely NFL career in an exclusive excerpt from his new memoir "A Life Impossible." (Full disclosure: I collaborated on the book with Steve.) Speaking of, Steve and I will be making two appearances this week in New Orleans, where Steve will perform a reading and sign copies of "A Life Impossible": Thursday, May 9, Octavia Books, 6 p.m.; Saturday, May 11, Garden District Books, 11 a.m. Hope to see you there! On this date in Saints historyMay 8, 1994 was a sad day in Saints history. After battling lung cancer for more than a year, former Saints President-General Manager Jim Finks passed away at his Metairie home. He was 66. That's it for today. We'll have more coverage and analysis throughout the week. Until next time... Cheers, Jeff Duncan |
