At the time, we expected that mobile ad spending would increase 20.7% from $87.30 billion in 2019 to $105.34 billion this year. Then the full scope of the coronavirus pandemic hit the US. The early March forecast remains a good baseline, but it’s obviously outdated. Despite increased time spent with mobile devices, ad spend is off sharply. Even so, the March forecast is a good starting point to discuss the effects of the coronavirus on the US advertising market. | In previous ad spending forecasts, we underestimated the difference in pricing between mobile and desktop, which led us to overestimate the size of paid mobile search. As a result, we lowered our forecast for mobile search spend in 2020 to $39.51 billion, or 37.5% of the total mobile spend in 2020. |
