MNT Sunday Supplement: 1 year of COVID-19 in a critical care department. Plus, articles you may have missed this week.
MNT’s Sunday Supplement: What are 'superfoods,' and do they live up to the hype? | March is National Nutrition Month, so this week, we’re taking a closer look at “superfoods,” one of the most hyped of all nutritional topics. Is there really evidence for claims that certain foods contain significantly more nutrients and offer greater health benefits than others? Or is this just clever marketing? In ’Superfoods:’ Fad or fact?, we look at what defines a superfood, some well-known examples, the potential benefits, and what effect this $137 billion market is having on both our health and our pockets. We also pinpoint several foods that can justly claim the title — plus one or two that rob attention from foods that are at least as healthy, just not as heavily marketed (kale, we’re looking at you). The message to take away is that although most superfoods will do no harm, eating a holistically healthy diet offers greater benefits in the long run. We’ve also selected six other illuminating nutrition articles for you to digest this week, including apple cider vinegar myths busted, our pick of the healthiest cheeses, and the latest findings on how diet affects mental health. We’ll be back with our regular daily newsletter tomorrow. In the meantime, please let us know what you think of today’s email — we’d love to hear if you have an appetite for more on nutrition.
