As the investigation into a masked gunman who stalked and killed the head of one of the largest U.S. health insurers moved into its third day Friday, possible leads emerged about his travel before the shooting.
🖊️ Minnesota U.S. Attorney Andy Luger to step down ahead of Trump transition. Luger is stepping down soon as the top federal law enforcement official in Minnesota. As is custom for political appointees, he’s resigning to make way for a yet-to-be-announced successor chosen by incoming President Donald Trump.
🏛️ Hennepin County jails meet state deadline to reduce inmate population. The state ordered the jail to reduce the number of inmates to under 600 people by Thursday. The state corrections department issued the order in early November, when the county jail population reached more than 850.
🏙️ Minneapolis City Council pushes back George Floyd Square construction. The city council delayed a plan for street construction at George Floyd Square, the intersection where a Minneapolis police officer murdered Floyd in 2020. Instead, the council opted to consider a pedestrian-only plaza.

❌ Federal Bureau of Prisons plans to ‘deactivate’ facility in Duluth. The move to suspend operations — short of a permanent closure — will affect more than 700 inmates currently housed there. Most of the 89 employees working at the prison camp will be offered positions at the federal prison in Sandstone.
📜 Minneapolis poet laureate Heid E. Erdrich presents official poem to the city. Erdrich is the city of Minneapolis’ inaugural poet laureate — an appointed figure who writes poetry for special occasions, typically for a city, state or organization. Erdrich took on the role in January for a one-year term.
