🦃 Whether you're in the car on your way to visit friends and family, in the kitchen cooking up a feast or just relaxing on Thanksgiving Day, listen in to MPR News for special holiday programing Thursday:

  • 9 a.m. — Talking Volumes with Kate DiCamillo — A heartwarming and hilarious conversation between MPR’s Kerri Miller and prolific Minnesota writer Kate DiCamillo recorded in front of a live audience at the Fitzgerald Theater.
  • 10 a.m. — Milk Street Radio’s Thanksgiving Special — Noted chef Christopher Kimball kicks off the cooking advice with this special show full of kitchen tips for the holidays
  • 11 a.m. — The Splendid Table’s Turkey Confidential — It’s not Thanksgiving without the turkey triage from Francis Lam and his team at the Splendid Table. They’ll bring us two hours of phone calls and kitchen hacks from Francis and his special guests. (Note: “Turkey Confidential” is pre-recorded again this year, so please don’t try to call in live with your mashed potato maladies.)
  • 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. — Finding Manoomin — MPR News editor Leah Lemm takes us along on her journey to connect with the Ojibwe tradition of harvesting and cooking wild rice. This documentary is full of sound and history and Leah’s own reflections on memory, culture and family.
❄️ Light snow showers and flurries will be possible Wednesday as a quick moving clipper swings through. The best chance of any light accumulations will be mostly in northern and western Minnesota with less to the east and southeast.

🥶 Behind the clipper, winds will increase for Thanksgiving and it will be colder. Thursday's high temperatures will be in just the teens and 20s. Northwest winds will blow at 10-20 mph.

Red Lake Nation and Minnesota DNR disagree on how to combat zebra mussels

Until 2018, Upper Lake and Lower Red Lake remained the only large walleye lake in the state still free from zebra mussels. That year the DNR announced it had found zebra mussel veliger — the tiny larvae — in Upper Red Lake. The small mollusks are known to filter out algae from lake water, a vital walleye food source.

The Steve Carroll Goalie School has been training young athletes — no matter their gender — for nearly three decades. Now, with the success of Minnesota’s professional women’s’ hockey team, girls at Carroll’s camp are able to dream bigger than they have before.
🦃 Walz, agriculture leaders celebrate Minnesota turkey production, show concern over tariffs. Walz and his agriculture advisers weighed in on possible tariffs coming from the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump, who he’ll impose 25 percent import tariffs on goods from Canada, China and Mexico.

🗳️ Minnesota Republicans to challenge election result in Shakopee House race in court.
GOP House Leader Lisa Demuth said Republicans would go to court to contest the outcome of the District 54A race. A recount showed DFL Rep. Brad Tabke beat Republican Aaron Paul by 14 votes, which was the result certified Monday by the canvassing board in Scott County.

📖 New book tells how the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe defended its reservation and sovereignty. “They Would Not Be Moved: The Enduring Struggle of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe to Keep their Reservation” details the nearly 200-year fight by the tribal nation to maintain their land.

🏫 5 things to know about Minneapolis schools’ effort to solve its budget crisis. Minneapolis school officials have been sounding the alarm for more than a year about a budget crisis brought on by decades of declining enrollment. Some have warned school closures may be needed to “right-size” the district’s buildings with its reduced student body.

🩺 Minnesota nursing homes sue to block state pay rule for workers. In a lawsuit filed in federal court Tuesday, two senior care providers — LeadingAge Minnesota and Care Providers of Minnesota — requested an injunction to stop the rule from taking effect.

🚶‍♀️ After turkey, take a trot. A little post-meal walk can be a big boost for health. Among the latest health hacks to go viral on TikTok is the idea of short post-dinner "fart walk" to aid digestion. Turns out, the science on this trend is solid, and so are the health benefits.
