Chief O’Hara promises review of MPD’s actions ahead of Grand Avenue shooting

Davis Moturi, who is Black, recounted in a restraining order petition in April that John Sawchak, who’s white, made racist comments and threw objects at him and had previously attacked him with a garden tool. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office charged Sawchak with felony threats this summer after he allegedly told Moturi in early July: “I should have killed you last night.”
 
The economy, Democracy, immigration are concerns for these Black and Latino men in Minnesota

Both major political parties believe they best represent the interests of Black and Latino men and are asking for their votes. MPR News spoke with five Minnesota men and asked them to tell us what issues and policies are motivating them to vote this year.
🚨 St. Paul police shoot, critically injure man at corner of University and Snelling. Authorities said the man pointed a handgun at officers and they were wearing body cameras that were activated. Several police accountability groups have called for the immediate release of that footage.

🤝  ‘This disagreement isn’t a sport’: Cousins on opposite sides of abortion find understanding. For years, two cousins both opposed abortion. But instead of growing apart when one of them changed her views, these cousins grew even closer.

🏊🏾 Drowning deaths of two autistic kids push water worries to the surface in Minnesota. The recent deaths of two Twin Cities-area children have renewed calls to do more to help protect autistic kids, who experts say can be drawn to water. Advocates, though, say the need goes beyond children on the spectrum.

🗳️ Wisconsin is closely divided again, but voters united in their desire for campaign’s end.
In the swirl of swing-state campaigning, Wisconsin voters brace for another close finish but seem to be ready for the nonstop political attention to be over.

🛣️ End is near for monthslong closure of Twin Cities highway. Work continues to repair and reopen a Twin Cities highway that’s been closed for months. MnDOT had hoped to have Highway 13 back open by Nov. 1 — but that’s now been pushed back to later in the month.

🌿 What to know about proposed Minneapolis cannabis rules ahead of council vote. The Minneapolis City Council is expected to adopt a set of zoning regulations for cannabis sales and manufacturing this week. Here are a few things you should know.

🧑🏻‍⚖️ Minnesota woman charged with voter fraud after local election officials suspect forged signature. The state is accusing Nashwauk resident Danielle Miller of signing absentee ballot materials for her deceased mother.

🕯️  Detroit Lakes man killed on a mission trip in Angol. In a statement released by Pastor Troy Easton of Lakes Area Vineyard Church, 44-year-old Beau Shroyer was killed ‘in an act of violence’ while serving in Angola.
🎧 How hockey safety has changed 1 year after Minnesota native’s death on the ice. Joe Delich, executive director of USA Hockey’s local division Minnesota Hockey, told MPR News the debate over neck guards was given new energy following Adam Johnson’s death.

🎧  As local newspapers shutter, online news source in Prior Lake aims to fill gap. Back in April, the Prior Lake American shut down along with five other newspapers that served the southwest metro. Now former Southwest News media general manager Laurie Hartmann is working to launch an online news source in Prior Lake.
