🍂 The leaves are out. As we approach mid-October, vibrant hues of yellow, red and orange begin to peak. Central through northern Minnesota is at 75-100 percent peak color, while the Twin Cities is not quite there, only 25-50 percent.

🥶 Temperatures will fall below our average highs as much cooler air moves in and stays through the weekend.

Lynx stun Liberty with 95-93 overtime win in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals
Napheesa Collier’s turnaround jumper with 8.8 seconds left lifted the Minnesota Lynx to a 95-93 win over the New York Liberty in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals.  
 
In some Minnesota schools, artificial intelligence gets a seat in the classroom

Teachers at Bloomington Kennedy High School are taking a practical view on artificial intelligence, teaching students how to use the technology and helping them understand where it can spin out of control, a sort of driver’s ed approach to AI.
 
Pohlad family puts Minnesota Twins up for sale

Joe Pohlad, the team’s executive chair, said Thursday his family wants “to find an ownership group who all of us can be proud of” but didn’t say whether he’s talked with any prospective buyers. The Pohlads have owned the team for 40 years.

🔥 Large fire in south Minneapolis injures 3, displaces dozens of people. A large fire in south Minneapolis that burned for hours from late Wednesday into Thursday morning left three people —  including two firefighters — injured and displaced dozens of residents.

🗳️ Minnesota’s ‘uncommitted’ voters go into election unsatisfied over lack of cease-fire, conflicted over Harris. “I’ll be voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz,” delegate Sam Doten said. “I don’t feel good about it.”

🏛️ Fearing obstruction, feds seek pause in Feeding Our Future civil suit ahead of criminal trial. A Ramsey County judge on Thursday agreed to put a key part of a Feeding Our Future civil case on hold after the federal prosecutor leading a related criminal case argued that the suit could interfere with an upcoming criminal trial.

🍩 Krispy Kreme plans return to Minnesota with a Fridley location.  The multinational donut and coffee chain is seeking construction bids for a location in Fridley. It would replace a former CVS at the intersection of I-694 and University Avenue Southeast.

🎭 Q&A: Local actor Ryan London Levin talks about taking on a 1-man show about Jewish identity. Six Points Theater in St. Paul is producing “Just for Us,” the Tony and Emmy award-winning one man show by comedian Alex Edelman, about Jewish identity. Twin Cities actor Ryan London Levin plays “Alex” in this new production, the first to perform the role other than Edelman.

🕯️ Longtime resort owner Bruce Kerfoot dies, ‘legend‘ of the Gunflint Trail.
Kerfoot was born at the resort, only leaving to go to college and to serve in the military. “He would always say he was the first white man born on Gunflint Lake,” said Bonnie Schudy, who worked for the Kerfoots at Gunflint Lodge for 15 years.
🎧 How the Mississippi‘s headwaters impact damage from gulf coast hurricanes. Minnesota is more connected to the flooding and land loss that region faces than you might think. The way we control the Mississippi River has serious implications on the future of that land.

🎧 Research finds 1 in 16 Somali children diagnosed with autism, 3 times more than state average. 
The data comes from a 2023 Centers for Disease Control  autism survey, with help from two University of Minnesota researchers who are tracking the rise in overall diagnoses over the years.
