| | At a Minneapolis brunch, hundreds of Black women ‘choose joy’ despite Trump win | Andrena Seawood was a poll judge on Election Day in a Twin Cities suburb that heavily favored Trump. She said it was challenging: voters refused to sign required oaths or take ballots from her, instead turning to her white colleagues for help. She said some also made sure to tell her they were voting for Trump, though it’s prohibited for election judges to even ask. | |

💰 Cup Food owners want Minneapolis to take over their property through eminent domain. In a new lawsuit, the owners of Cup Foods and other businesses at George Floyd Square are asking a judge to force the city of Minneapolis to buy them out. 👮🏻 Police monitor says MPD making progress on court-ordered overhaul. At the Sabathani Community Center near George Floyd Square on Wednesday evening, David Douglass told an audience of around 100 people that things are going well. 🚓 State grants extension for Hennepin County to reduce its jail population. The Minnesota Department of Corrections says the jail has too few staff for the number of people housed there and blamed the poor staffing levels for a spate of recent inmate deaths. 📷 Codebreakers, fighter pilots and artists: A new photography book features local centenarians. Valérie Jardin’s project, “One Century,” features black-and-white portraits of over 20 centenarians in the activities that bring them joy, celebrating their lives, resilience and stories; her book and exhibition open Nov. 16 at the Praxis Gallery in Minneapolis. 🏛️ Minneapolis City Council enacts labor standards board. The new board would advise the City Council on labor policies. It would be made up of an equal number of representatives for employers, employees and other community members, like labor policy experts and consumers. 🗳️ Two Carlton County races end in ties — winners determined by chance. A tie vote in any election is rare. But two in a single election, in a single jurisdiction? That’s what officials in Carlton County south of Duluth are navigating after two local races last week ended in dead heats. 🍖 Meatpacking company to pay $2 million penalty for alleged child labor violations at Minnesota plant. The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry said Thursday that it found Smithfield Foods illegally employed at least 11 teenagers — some as young as 14 — at its plant in St. James between April 2021 and April 2023. 🏺 Tradition and innovation on display in Pueblo pottery exhibit at Mia. Pueblo artist and potter Jody Folwell is credited with beginning a contemporary art movement in Pueblo pottery. The Minneapolis Institute of Art is featuring a gallery of Folwell’s original works through the end of January. 🏒 PWHL joins video game roster for NHL 25 in holiday update. The Professional Women’s Hockey League and video game giant Electronic Arts have teamed up to bring all six teams to “EA SPORTS NHL 25,” the latest title in a long-running series of professional hockey games for consoles and PC gamers. |
