Gold Painted Branch Christmas Tree

By katrine2706

branch tree with lights against a pink wallI love Christmas, everybody loves Christmas, but I don't always want to spend a lot for decorations especially with the Christmas tree. I don't want to buy the big ones that end up getting thrown away, since our place gets flooded every year and it feels like I have thrown away my money then.

Children's Book Wall Art
I created this book art when decorating my son's farm bedroom. Since we went with a down on the farm theme, I wanted to incorporate some of his favorite books in artwork.
Adding Water To Your Iron
I do a lot of quilting and, as you know, you have to iron a lot of quilt pieces. I was always running out of water for the iron. I have found a really neat way to have lots of water and be able to pour it in your iron without spilling it everywhere.
Save Scraps of Colorful Paper for Scrapbook Cards
Save Scraps of Colorful Paper for Scrapbook Cards - torn scraps of paper glued to a rectangle of white paper
Keep Thread From Tangling
When hand sewing, whether a button or whatever, take the thread and run through a bar of soap. It won't tangle and makes the thread stronger
Testing Fabric for Colorfastness
Remember, before starting a project, newly purchased fabric should be washed and dried prior to use. This will pre-shrink the fabric. You will also want to test for colorfastness at this time (reds in particular).
Using Small Fabric Scraps For Quilt Tops
Everyone who sews has lots of small scraps. I use mine to make quilt tops. Cut muslin or light color fabric into strips 4 inches wide and as long as you want the quilt (maybe 3 yards). Or you can cut squares about 10-12 inches.
Curtains from Tablecloths
Right now, Christmas colors are on sale, including pine green and burgundy red, so please keep this in mind as I relate to you how to make a pair of curtains for less than $10.
Use Head Lamp for Hand Sewing
I am adding iridescent ribbon to the ruffles on my daughter's prom dress and was having a difficult time seeing to sew. I found that using a head-lamp, the kind that you strap onto your head for hiking, etc. is wonderful to use when hand-sewing.
Storing Large Quilting Pattern Pieces
To store larger pattern pieces for applique, I just roll them up and put them in a empty paper towel cardboard tube. I store them in a box large enough that if the pattern is longer than the tube it won't bend or tear.
Making a Durable Stencil
To make a permanent, strong stencil, save the hard clear plastic that comes out of bacon. Wash it, and draw your design on it and use an exact-o knife to cut it out. It is very durable and holds up well.
Hot Glue for Gift Wrapping
After running out of tape during a Christmas present wrapping marathon I decided to try hot glue. It worked so well I haven't used tape since.
