Millions in affordable housing $$ wasted or unspent in BR

with Jennifer Wadsworth | Assistant metro editor

Good morning, readers.

Let's get you caught up on our latest stories as the weekend gets underway.

Millions wasted or unspent

Over the past 11 years, East Baton Rouge Parish has received more than $60 million from the federal government to address one of its most intractable problems: affordable housing. Yet 20% of that money went to waste or languished without getting spent. That's according to an analysis by our very own Terry Jones, who spent months looking into the city-parish's stewardship of affordable housing funds.

Forgotten graves

What started as an effort to restore a centuries-old family cemetery on the grounds of the BASF chemical plant in Ascension Parish turned into the discovery of a forgotten burial site for enslaved people dating back to the 1820s. And on Thursday, company officials held a ceremony to memorialize the site. Ellyn Couvillion covered the event, which you can read about here.
