ONE OF TOM ROSENBAUER'S earliest books was "The Orvis Guide to Prospecting for Trout." It was likely a take-off from an earlier book called "Prospecting for Trout" (1993), which itself probably included material from "Reading Trout Streams" (1988). The Orvis Guide version has been re-edited and expanded multiple times. Why does it remain so popular? Because it's essential knowledge. Here are two examples from books in the series. Both are worth your time: "Rich and Poor Trout Streams" and "Reading the Water." Even if you've never had the chance to witness a black caddis hatch on Montana's Bighorn River, you'll appreciate the ease of tying a CDC X-Caddis, which of course can be used to imitate small caddis on any river. This week Matt Grobert demonstrates how to tie a darker Bighorn CDC X-Caddis, which videographer Tim Flagler notes is "simple and super-effective."
