A Walk Upstream

DOUGAL RILLSTONE'S new book "Upstream on the Mataura" is a wonderful read, meditative in approach but filled with the details that make books about journeys so compelling. The journey in this case is Rillstone's 240-kilometre walk upstream from the coast at Fortrose, New Zealand to the source of the Mataura River, in the Eyre Mountains. In the course of his trip and telling of events, Rillstone reveals the river as one of the finest dry-fly streams for brown trout on the planet. We're happy to share the first chapter with you this week.

GETTING THEM ON, THEN IN

Question: “I have been missing a lot of fish lately—presentation is good, fish takes the fly, I set the hook and either have the fish on for a second or two and then they’re gone or when I set the hook the fly pops out of the fish’s mouth. This seems to happen more with a dry than with a nymph, but still happens with both. So what are the techniques for setting the hook and keeping a fish on?”  — Jeffrey W  Read the answer...
