CPUC approves SDG&E-owned microgrids for resiliency

Microgrids are an important tool in a utility’s toolbox in terms of decarbonization and resiliency. They break up the larger grid into smaller subsets and can be used to power critical facilities that can’t afford to lose power. If they are powered by clean energy, the serve to lower emissions, too.

 

California utility, San Diego Gas and Electric has just been approved to build and own a handful of microgrids around the city of San Diego. The projects stemmed from a State Emergency issued last summer, which outlines California’s energy needs in the face of growing climate challenges.

The tariff permits Black Hills Energy to interrupt the customer’s electric service if needed, during periods of peak electrical demand, to prioritize the electricity requirements of its existing CLFP customers.

Under the new rule, DER interconnection requests will be reviewed based on a hosting capacity analysis, which models conditions on the distribution grid.
