Michigan woman first in U.S. to receive promising new cancer treatment |
In some ways, Tiffiney Beard's cancer journey was like the countless stories she’d seen depicted on TV and in the news. Her initial diagnosis was scary, her thoughts grim. But thanks to a never-been-done-before treatment, the 46-year-old Redford woman’s battle wound up looking different than most. Beard was the nation’s first recipient of step-and-shoot proton radiation treatment, undergoing three months of therapy with minimal side effects or disruptions to her routine. As of late April, she was nine months cancer free. How it works: Step-and-shoot proton arc therapy is a new radiation option that allows physicians to better target tumors, explained Dr. Rohan Deraniyagala, a radiation oncologist at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak. With the treatment going “exceptionally well,” the care team at Corewell’s Proton Therapy Center plans to open it up to more patients, including those with breast, lung and prostate cancer. Also in health: Ahead of a nationally watched bid to become Michigan’s next governor, Democrat and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is releasing a memoir this month that includes her first public discussion of a miscarriage she had about eight years ago — an experience she says will shape her commitment to increasing access to reproductive healthcare in the swing state. |

Tariffs to add $2K-$15K to cost of making vehicles, study finds |
Costing more: New U.S. tariffs and retaliatory tariffs imposed on new vehicles sold in the U.S. would add tariff cost burdens of between $2,000 to $15,000 to some vehicles, according to an analysis by an East Lansing consultant group. Anderson Economic Group published a report on the impacts of the latest tariff-related proclamations by the administration of President Donald Trump, who last week announced plans to relax some of his planned 25% tariffs on autos and auto parts. Tariff talk: Ford Motor Co. says it expects to take a $1.5 billion hit to its operating profit from tariffs this year and is withdrawing its full-year financial guidance due to the uncertainty created by the Trump administration’s evolving trade policy. Polling results: President Donald Trump received poor ratings from 600 participants in a Michigan poll conducted last week. EPIC-MRA, a Lansing-based poll firm, published a report showing 50% of participants rated Trump as “unfavorable” compared to 43% who viewed the president as “favorable,” the report read. |

Mother’s Day weather looks fantastic |
Weekend weather: Mother’s Day across Michigan will be mostly sunny across our state. Early morning will be cool at sunrise. The strong sun will take care of any chill by late morning. Southern Michigan will start in the mid-40s. Northern Lower Michigan will start around 40 degrees. The Upper Peninsula will be pretty chilly in the early morning. Full sunshine should boost the temperatures to at least 70 degrees by mid-afternoon. A little chilly: Temperatures will change quickly Wednesday afternoon as a cold northeast wind kicks in. Early tomorrow afternoon will be very nice in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Ann Arbor, Jackson and Detroit. The cold air will be pushing into the Saginaw Valley region. Flint will be in the transition zone. The wind dies off by Friday morning which actually will allow the air to slowly warm up into the weekend. One year after a devastating tornado ripped through Pavilion Estates mobile home park in Kalamazoo County, residents still struggle with PTSD, financial hardship, and fear of future storms. Many report never hearing warning sirens before the twister destroyed homes and lives. "I still have nightmares," one survivor tells Devin Anderson-Torrez. |

Deliberations to continue Wednesday in Christopher Schurr’s murder trial |
In the courtroom: Jurors in the Christopher Schurr murder trial are set to return Wednesday morning for further deliberations. After about 12 hours of deliberations this week, the jury failed to reach a verdict Tuesday on the charges of second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter against Schurr, reports Michael Kranz. Those charges stem from Schurr, then a Grand Rapids police officer, fatally shooting Black motorist Patrick Lyoya during a traffic stop April 4, 2022. Turned down: The Michigan Court of Appeals denied a request from the Oxford High School shooter to withdraw his guilty plea or be resentenced after he was sentenced to life in prison in 2023 for killing four students and wounding others. Abuse allegations: A Saginaw man has filed a pair of federal lawsuits against two Michigan juvenile detention facilities, alleging he endured horrific sexual abuse and torture by various staff members. One of the two facilities was shuttered years ago after state inspectors issued a damning report detailing physical abuse taking place within its walls. Both have had female employees convicted of sexually assaulting minor residents. |

Cruise ships to visit Mackinac Island 80 times in 2025: When to see them |
Setting sail: The 2025 cruise ship season has begun on Mackinac Island with 80 scheduled visits from six ships, including the 665-foot Viking Octantis which kicked off the season in April. Justine Lofton reports eight days will feature multiple ships docking simultaneously, with the busiest day hosting four vessels. The Great Lakes cruise industry expects a $230 million economic impact this year, a 15% increase over 2024. Mackinac Island's New Lilac Lounge: Mission Point Resort has unveiled a stylish new bar featuring a full drink menu, aperitifs and live piano music. The lounge, which welcomes both resort guests and day visitors, opened alongside a refreshed Chianti restaurant with expanded dining options. Tanda Gmiter reports the resort has also added themed dinners, mixology classes, and expanded retail options for the 2025 season. Lumberman's Monument Visitor Center: The popular Up North attraction opens May 9 with a season of free programming including historical "Shanty Boys" reenactments and Smokey Bear's 81st birthday celebration. Justine Lofton reports the Oscoda Township site will feature Tuesday Kids' Days starting in July, a new hydroelectric dam exhibit, and nearby camping at one of the first campgrounds built in the Huron-Manistee National Forests. |
