Michigan’s weekend weather: Friday starts an accumulating snow |
Two weather-makers are on tap for Michigan’s weekend period. Let’s look at who gets how much snow. Firstly, you should know neither of these weather-makers are full-fledged Michigan snowstorms. There is a very heavy snow and ice storm rolling through states south of Michigan Friday into Saturday. We will get a light extension of the northernmost snow out of the major winter storm to the south. The details: Light snow will develop Friday afternoon over southeast and south-central Lower Michigan and continue Friday night before ending early Saturday morning. The total snow forecast for Friday afternoon to Saturday morning shows a widespread light snow amounting to one to two inches for most of us in Michigan. This will especially be true for cities in the southern half of Michigan. Coming soon: A lobe of the Polar Vortex is going to swing through Ontario just north of Michigan. That’s what the weather pattern shows for Michigan in the next week. An Alberta Clipper-type storm system will swing through Sunday and Monday. Next, we get the blast of Arctic air Tuesday and Wednesday. By next weekend, it looks like the lobe of the Polar Vortex is ready to swing south and through Michigan again. |

Michigan hospital limits guests amid rise of flu, RSV |
Detroit Medical Center is responding to a rise in respiratory illness cases by limiting visitors to its facilities, including the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. The temporary new guidelines, announced Thursday, Dec. 9, will allow up to two visitors per patient at any given time, and no visitors age 12 and younger. Visitors age 13 and older will be asked not to visit if they are experiencing illness or cold symptoms, including fever, cough and/or rash. Extending resources: A program offering free virtual health care to an estimate 400,000 eligible Michigan residents has been extended through June 30. The service, provided through a partnership between insurer Priority Health and virtual care company Curai Health, was first offered to uninsured Michigan adults in August. The plan was to offer it until the end of 2024, but Priority Health announced the extension Wednesday, Jan. 8. In Bay County: McLaren Health Care has expanded its opportunities for heart patients, opening an intensive care unit dedicated to cardiovascular surgery patients, officials with the health system announced this week. |

Amsterdam, Milan and Detroit. The Motor City among top global destinations for 2025. |
Make the trip: The New York Times has named the Motor City among its 52 spots to visit this year around the world. Nestled between Osaka, Japan and Trent-Severn Waterway, Ontario, Detroit lands at number 39 on this expansive list. The list highlights Detroit’s art scene, Underground Railroad history, and new 22-acre green haven, Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park, planned to open summer 2025, as reasons to visit the city. Winter adventures: After a stuttered start to the ski season, the Porcupine Mountains Winter Sports Complex is reopening the ski hill this weekend. The natural ski mountain in the Upper Peninsula welcomed four inches of fresh snow this week, with the forecast predicting more snow showers on Friday and Saturday. The Little River Band of Ottawa Indians' plan to build a proposed $180 million casino in Fruitport Township is dead without confirmation from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The tribe for the past 14 years has tried to build a casino and 220-room hotel on a 60-acre property at the U.S. 31/I-96 interchange in Fruitport Township. Per the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, the development needed state and federal approval before shovels could go in the ground, because the property is not on tribal land. |

Welcome to Detroit: Lions joined in success by surging Red Wings, Pistons |
Making a comeback: A little more than a year ago, Detroit had the dubious claim of being home to the worst-performing teams of any major pro sports city. But now the Lions are in the playoffs for the second straight year. The Tigers ended a nine-season playoff drought with their own surprise run to the postseason in 2024. And the Red Wings and Pistons are both off to strong starts to their seasons and generating playoff hopes. In baseball news: Left-handed pitcher Bailey Horn was claimed off waivers by the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday after a brief stint within the Detroit Tigers system. Costly game: The Lions’ win against the Minnesota Viking and covering the 3.5-point spread resulted in a $74 million loss for Flutter Entertainment, the company that operates FanDuel Sportsbook, according to the Financial Times. Part of that loss was due to prop bets; nine different players scored touchdowns, including Jameson Williams, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta for the Lions. |

Mackinac Island ferry services say costs are rising by $2.5M, ask city to unfreeze ticket prices |
A month after the Mackinac Island City Council voted to freeze 2025 ferry ticket prices while they work with a consultant on how to regulate the company that now owns both ferry services to the island, representatives of Hoffmann Marine this week again appealed to city leaders to at least meet them halfway and approve a bump in ticket prices for the season ahead. Shuttering stores: GameStop, one of the nation’s premier sellers of video games and trading cards, is quietly closing stores around the U.S., but has yet to issue a statement or formal announcement on the matter, according to reports. Some stores in Michigan have hung posters at the business letting customers know the respective location is closing. Open for business: Fast-casual restaurant chain Slim Chickens has officially opened its first full-service Michigan location in Scio Township, west of Ann Arbor. Slim Chickens currently has a couple of smaller locations on Central Michigan University and Oakland University campuses, but those don’t feature the full menu. |
