Those Eagles sure did fly |
If it couldn't be the Lions, at least it wasn't the Chiefs. The Philadelphia Eagles crushed the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22, becoming the 2025 Super Bowl champions. Jalen Hurts threw for two touchdowns and ran for a score on a tush push. Fun fact - defensive back Cooper DeJean became the first player in Super Bowl history to intercept a pass or score a touchdown on his birthday. What a way to celebrate 22. |

Michigan’s minimum wage is set to jump. Here’s how it compares to other states. |
Changes coming: On Feb. 21, Michigan will raise its state minimum wage by almost $2 per hour, from $10.56 to $12.48 — that is, unless lawmakers block it first. How does Michigan’s minimum wage compare to other states? Currently, it ranks 28th of the 50 states, just behind Ohio. Come Feb. 21, Michigan would jump to No. 19 out of 50. Findings: Michigan’s teacher workforce is seeing small signs of growth, but it remains less stable than before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a recent study from researchers at Michigan State University. Outside: Are you the owner of a big dawn redwood? It could be eligible for inclusion on the Michigan Big Tree Register. |

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson enters Michigan governor race |
Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson has entered the Michigan governor race. The popular law enforcement official announced his plans to run during a Feb. 6 news conference at Mott Community College in Flint. Swanson is the second Democrat to officially step into the race, following Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s announcement in January. Speaking of governors: As if the Chicago Bears stealing Ben Johnson from the Detroit Lions wasn’t enough, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker says he is renaming Lake Michigan after his state. In a video released Friday, Pritzker made the “announcement” in a skit clearly mocking President Trump. More in public interest: After Jan. 6, rioters say they lost jobs, homes and relationships, but regrets are few. |

Michigan insulated from Republican effort to junk EPA lead pipes rule |
The latest: Policy experts say Michigan is insulated from a Congressional effort to repeal recent federal requirements that expedite lead service pipe replacements thanks to a state rule which requires that all lead lines to be removed within 15 years. Also in environmental news: The state of Michigan is pausing expansion of an electric vehicle charging network after the federal government ordered a spending halt as part of the Trump administration’s continued effort to block and reverse Biden climate polices. Standing in front of hundreds of protestors at the Michigan Capitol on Wednesday, Feb. 5, Rep. Laurie Pohutsky, D-Livonia, said she had surgery to become voluntarily sterile out of fear for how President Donald Trump’s administration could limit future reproductive health care access. |

Michigan State’s last national championship team honored with throwback win |
On the court: The Breslin Center was rockin’ on Saturday as the Spartans secured a huge comeback win in a game that celebrated the 25-year reunion of Michigan State’s 2000 National Championship team. After the victory, Izzo grabbed the mic and gave an emotional speech recognizing the past, present and future of MSU basketball. For Jason Richardson, who was a freshman on the 2000 National Championship team, it was a full-circle moment as he got the unique opportunity to see his son, freshman guard Jase Richardson, on the hardwood. Jase dropped a career-high 29 points in front of his father, helping the Spartans secure a 86-74 victory against the Oregon Ducks. On the ice: The Michigan State Spartans ice hockey squad exacted revenge in Detroit for Friday’s loss to their in-state rival, pummeling Michigan 6-1 to earn their second Iron D trophy. |

You can do horseback rides through the woods all winter at these Up North resorts |
Hop on: Unless you’ve got your own horse tucked in your backyard paddock, horseback trail rides in the winter can be hard to find. Two Northern Michigan resorts offer trail rides for all ages - and horse experiences for kids - year-round. This winter with all the snow that’s fallen Up North, these trail rides through the woods have taken on a hushed and extra-scenic atmosphere. The Highlands at Harbor Springs and its sister resort, Boyne Mountain, both offer winter horseback trail rides. Winter fairytale vibe: If you think the beauty of a horse-drawn sleigh ride can only be experienced around the holidays, think again and then make a beeline for Treetops Resort. This four-season resort just outside of Gaylord has been offering sleigh rides every weekend this winter. Ski and snowshoe through the pines: If you see fresh snow and are immediately tempted to make fresh tracks then head to the Lakeshore for groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails. Ottawa County Parks and Recreation has two rentals spots for winter sports. |
