Michigan remains a purple state, experts say. Change could be coming. |
Red or blue: While some votes in the 2024 presidential election remain uncounted at the time this article was published, the early math adds up when Matthew Grossman, a professor of politics and public policy at Michigan State University, calculates whether or not Michigan will retain its status as a swing-state the next time. But factors could change the political map in the coming years; if not by the 2028 election, then potentially by the 2032 cycle. Results for Oshtemo Township, Brady Township and Portage races could change after the county clerk’s office identified uncounted ballots and issues with equipment after election night. Kalamazoo County is now reporting a turnout of 145,213 voters — the highest turnout for a presidential election since 2000. Election results: Michigan’s election results look a little different after thousands of uncounted votes were found and counted across the state on Friday, Nov. 8. | Forecast: The weather trend this week isn‘t the trend you’d expect. In November we are supposed to gradually turn colder through a week’s time. This week we will do the opposite with the coldest weather on Tuesday and a gradual warm-up into the weekend. The total rainfall forecast for Thursday shows the idea of heaviest rain over western Lower and light rain to perhaps very little rain in spots of far eastern Lower Michigan. Holiday weather: The days just before Thanksgiving look warmer than normal. It doesn’t look extremely warm by November standards, but afternoon temperatures in the 40s and 50s look likely. There could be a few of us that have 60 degrees in one afternoon before Thanksgiving. The National Weather Service has confirmed a brief, weak tornado occurred in Oakland County Sunday evening. The tornado is ranked as an EF-0 tornado with estimated peak winds around 70 mph. The National Weather Service at White Lake, MI says the tornado was 150 feet wide at its widest. The tornado existed for about one mile of path length. |

Rye seeds rescued from 146-year-old shipwreck could revive crop in Michigan |
Deep dive: A Michigan distilling company dedicated to agritourism and storytelling in its whiskey went to the depths of Lake Huron in the hopes of resurrecting an old rye variety. Mammoth Distilling and Michigan State University are teaming up to bring back what’s now known as Bentley rye, according to an article from MSU Today. Snowbird: A five-year-old female Great Lakes piping plover was recently spotted in its favorite wintering grounds in Crandon Park, Florida. The specific federally endangered bird known by scientists as “LeVeL” is back to where it was first spotted last winter with a broken leg. The female bird now completed its migration cycle to North Manitou Island, hatched three chicks, and has returned to the sunshine state. In the classroom: Approximately 500 students in Kent County are learning to become "habit heroes" thanks to an educational partnership with John Ball Zoo for the 2024-25 school year. Educators at the zoo are teaching students from Grand Rapids Public Schools and Godfrey-Lee schools in Wyoming about wildlife preservation, birds and native plant species. |

4,500-worker strike at Michigan Medicine cancelled a day before it was to begin |
A strike from a 4,500-member union planned for Tuesday has been avoided after the University of Michigan Health and the group reached a memorandum of understanding. The memorandum creates “a framework” for the two negotiating teams to reach a tentative agreement over the next two weeks, according to a joint media-release. Investigation: A contractor in West Michigan is facing criminal charges for allegedly not completing projects he was paid to do. In total, Wesley Pawloski is accused of defrauding multiple homeowners and business owners out of $100,000 by not finishing work. New costs: Motorists who use a credit card at the Mackinac Bridge will now be hit with a new convenience fee. The Mackinac Bridge Authority announced on Nov. 8 that it will be collecting a 2.3% fee for tolls paid by credit cards to help recoup “increased costs for credit and debit card transaction fees.” |

| Start planning: Daylight hours are closing in so it’s time to make the most of them before the winter hibernation. MLive asked Benson for her top Michigan recommendations for solo travelers looking to shake off the monotony of everyday life. Here are five places in Michigan she suggested for day-trippers and weekenders alike. Save the date: A high-energy, freestyle snowboarding event will shred through this Upper Peninsula downtown in February – and it’s not too early to make plans, Visit Keweenaw announced. Jibba Jabba is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, on Houghton’s Huron Street, where a freestyle snowboarding course will be built from Sheldon Street to the Portage Canal – a full two blocks. Spectators line the course. Ends this week: Outdoor recreation enthusiasts looking to get an authentic Upper Peninsula winter experience can do so at a discount while early bird ski passes are available for the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Early bird tickets are available now through Friday, Nov. 15. |
