Want a firework-free Fourth of July? Check out these state parks |
America's Independence Day is this Friday and many cities across Michigan are getting ready to celebrate with firework displays, parades, cookouts, and more. If plan on having your own pyrotechnic show this weekend, remember that fireworks are banned from Michigan's national forests, state parks, and other public lands. At state parks, smaller novelties like party poppers, snappers/drop pops, snakes, smoke bombs, sparklers and ground spinners are allowed For those who prefer to spend Independence Day on without the sound of fireworks, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Veteran Affairs rounded up 11 state parks that are quiet during the holiday. |

Michigan politicians react to Senate’s passage of Trump’s ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ |
In politics: After a long and turbulent overnight session, Senate Republicans narrowly passed President Donald Trump’s legislative priority, the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” with a 50-50 split vote that tapped Vice President JD Vance as the tie-breaker. Michigan’s two senators, both Democrats, each voted no, along with the Senate’s entire Democratic caucus. They were joined by three Republican senators - North Carolina’s Thom Tillis, Maine’s Susan Collins and Kentucky’s Rand Paul. The battle between President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk reignited Tuesday. A truce between the two former campaign partners crumbled as Trump once again threatened to go after Musk’s business dealings in retaliation to Musk’s public criticisms of Trump and Republicans. Curbing corporate influence: A new ballot initiative launched Monday, June 30 seeks to ban political contributions from companies with government contracts over $250,000 and regulated monopoly utilities like DTE Energy and Consumers Energy, while instituting new disclosures around so-called “dark money” flowing to candidates and policy priorities through secretive nonprofits. |

Best in class: Michigan’s two largest college towns are among top 50 most educated cities in America, according to WalletHub rankings. Up for vote: A new 1-mill tax proposal that would support career-technical programming in Washtenaw County schools is officially on its way for the November ballot. |

Saginaw doctor, Battle Creek care worker among 324 charged in nationwide health care fraud |
Fraud: Two Michigan residents are among 324 people to be charged in what officials call a nationwide takedown of health care fraud. Among the defendants are Michigan residents Dr. James A. Carthron, 61, and Daleena T. Miller, 42, both charged with making false claims to Medicaid. Michigan AG Dana Nessel alleges Dr. Carthron billed Medicaid approximately $11,000 for services he did not perform. Miller of Battle Creek allegedly placed false information on a medical chart to bill Medicaid $8,640 for services she did not render. Identities released: Two men found dead in a campground at Isle Royale National Park on June 8 have been identified as a father and son, Bradley Baird, 30, and John Baird, 60, of Northville, according to media reports. Be aware: The Federal Bureau of Investigation says a new scam is targeting the public in hopes of stealing private medical data. A warning issued on June 27 says the criminals are sending emails and text messages to patients and health care providers. The messages are disguised to look like legitimate communications from trusted health care authorities. |

Popular WNBA player on expansion: ‘Don’t know how excited people are to be going to Detroit’ |
WNBA player questions Detroit expansion: Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham sparked controversy by questioning the WNBA's decision to expand to Detroit, saying "I don't know how excited people are to be going to Detroit." The city quickly defended its basketball credentials, citing the Detroit Shock's strong attendance history and championship legacy. Brandon Champion reports that Cunningham's comments drew sharp reactions from Michiganders, including Detroit-born journalist Jemele Hill who responded, "Sis, you play in Indiana. No disrespect." Pistons acquire sharpshooter: The Detroit Pistons are adding former Michigan guard Duncan Robinson in a sign-and-trade deal with the Miami Heat, sending forward Simone Fontecchio to Miami. The career 39.7% three-point shooter will sign a three-year, $48 million contract, helping replace the shooting void left by departing free agents. Jacob Richman reports Robinson will reunite with former Michigan teammate Caris LeVert, who is also joining Detroit. Red Wings legend Alex Delvecchio dies at 93: Detroit Red Wings icon Alex Delvecchio, who spent his entire 24-year NHL career with the franchise, has died peacefully surrounded by family. Mobile shooting range making 6 stops for free gun safety, target practice in Michigan |
Summer gun safety: This summer a mobile shooting range is making its way through Michigan state parks to promote gun safety as well as some early target practice before the fall hunting season. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is working with the hunting nonprofit Pheasants Forever to bring this portable experience to six state parks. Setting a record: When you’re spending your holiday on an island, it’s natural for some games to go round and round. That will be the case on Thursday, July 3, when Mackinac Island is the venue for Skip the Straits, and people try to skip a Waboba ball 7 miles around the island in a record-setting event. Get your tickets: Writer and Actor Kumail Nanjiani is coming to the Michigan Theater in September. Nanjiani is performing in Ann Arbor as a part of his “Doing This Again” standup tour, which marks his return to standup comedy after a ten-year break. Nanjiani is known for his role as Dinesh in HBO comedy series “Silicon Valley” and for starring in the 2017 romantic comedy film “The Big Sick,” which he co-wrote with his wife, Emily V. Gordon. |
