Where to take in the fall colors across Michigan |
Michigan's peak fall color times are right around the corner, meaning the state's trees will soon be transformed into vibrant shades of red, orange and yellow. To pick the best time to see the leaves changing color, check out this peak color timeline. This timing forecast is based on historical normal fall color times, warmer falls, dry weather and the upcoming two week warm spell. Returning $300M in mental health funds part of far-reaching Michigan House GOP education plan |
A Michigan House Republicans education plan unveiled on Monday, Sept. 9, includes returning $300 million mental health funding, an alternative to the state's current standardized testing, and an overhaul that would provide students more skills and technical course options before graduation. Close to home: Students who attend regional public universities, like Grand Valley State University or Saginaw Valley State, are more likely to remain in-state after graduation, according to research shared by GVSU from the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research. Also in education: Families of middle school and high school students in the Muskegon Heights Public School Academy System will soon have access to free internet. |

Tim Walz to visit Michigan this week following Kamala Harris, Donald Trump debate |
Stopping by: Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will visit Michigan Thursday to Friday, Sept. 12-13, as part of Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign to win over swing states in the presidential election. His arrival is scheduled two days after Harris plans to engage their Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump, in their first debate in Philadelphia. The ABC News event is planned for 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10. Be aware: Children and teens are invited to come meet the two candidates running for Grand Rapids mayor and ask questions about their priorities at a new youth forum that will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 25. In case you missed it: From a werewolf tearing off his shirt to a simple “ope, I voted,” clerks will be handing out newly designed “I voted” stickers during the general election on November 5. |

Northern Lights possible this week with geomagnetic storm watch |
Looking at the sky: Auroras could spread over the Great Lakes region and the northern parts of the United States early this week as we enter into a geomagnetic storm watch window. What's that? A CME or coronal mass ejection—an eruption of material from the surface of the sun—happened on Sunday and should reach the Earth by Tuesday. Any potential Northern Lights could linger from Tuesday into Wednesday, scientists from the NOAA and National Weather Service said. Summer temps aren't finished: A September heat wave starts today and is expected to last until next week. Most days within the next two weeks will hit 80 degrees and could hit 87 degrees. |

‘Cost prohibitive’: Michigan drivers rejected digital plates |
Digital license plates failed to take off in Michigan, and now they’re no longer for sale. Sales of digital license plates officially ended Aug. 10 after Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson terminated the state’s agreement with Reviver, the only company in the state that was allowed to sell the plates. At the pump: Currently sitting at the lowest price since February, gasoline costs in Michigan are expected to continue falling, experts said. Gas prices in Michigan are down 12 cents from last week to an average of $3.25 per gallon for regular unleaded, according to AAA data. That’s 37 cents less than a month ago and 40 cents less than this time last year. Under investigation: A probe from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking into claims that certain Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator models can catch fire, even when the engine is shut off. |
