Now that we are officially in October, it's time to start the countdown to the spookiest day of the season: Halloween. Children dressed up as ghouls and goblins will soon be knocking on our doors to fill their pumpkin pails with candy. To kick off the month, head over to Glenlore Trails: Enchanted in Commerce Township for a family-friendly one mile nighttime walk through the woods. The Halloween-themed attraction is open Thursday through Sunday each week until November 3. If you plan on hitting the road to take in a spooky adventure this month, be sure to swing by one of these five great roadside stops to see the fall colors along the way. |

Michigan drivers unite in fight for digital license plates |
Hundreds of drivers with digital license plates are petitioning Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in an effort to avoid going back to standard metal plates. According to Reviver, the only company in the state that was allowed to sell digital plates, about 350 of its customers since Sept. 19 have sent emails to Benson calling on her to reach a new agreement with the company that would allow them to continue digital plate sales in Michigan. Drivers, beware: Toyota announced a voluntary recall earlier this month that impacts roughly 42,000 Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles in the U.S. that were produced between June 2022 and September 2024. The automaker says the recall is necessary because of a problem with the brakes that can increase the risk of a crash. Also in infrastructure: A popular foot bridge known as the “Little Mac” is now closed until November 11 for crucial maintenance. The 246-foot-long Manistee River Suspension Bridge connects the Manistee River Trail to the 4,800-mile North Country Trail, completing a 20-mile loop. |

Michigan's weather this week: Only 1-2 rains, somewhat cooler |
Forecast: The western half of Lower Michigan can expect a couple hours of showers Tuesday morning. The eastern half of Lower Michigan can expect rain for a few hours Tuesday afternoon and early evening. After we get through Tuesday’s occasional showers we don’t have rain in the forecast until late this coming weekend. In the skies: Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS has been visible for a few days now, but really early in the morning. The better viewing of the comet should come in mid-October. At that time the comet will be visible in the evening after sunset. Around October 9 the comet will emerge in the evening sky, but again just above the horizon. Environmental news: Biden administration officials visited Michigan this week to highlight federal subsidies going to repower the closed Palisades nuclear plant on Lake Michigan and promote a long-term vision for scaling up nuclear energy. |

Whitmer declares Sept. 30 ‘Megatron Day’ in honor of Calvin Johnson |
Recognition: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is honoring former Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson by declaring Sept. 30 as “Megatron Day” in Michigan. Widely known as Megatron, Johnson is revered as one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history. The proclamation coincided with the Detroit Lions Monday Night Football game where Johnson was inducted into the Pride of the Lions, the permanent display at Ford Field honoring the greatest players in franchise history. New look: Monday’s Week 4 matchup against the Seahawks had a different vibe. While the usual fanfare was present, fans were also sporting the Lions’ new black and blue uniforms, making their debut on a night when Lions legend Calvin Johnson was set to be honored at halftime. Legend: Pro Basketball Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo has died of brain cancer, the NBA announced Monday. He was 58. Nicknamed “Mount Mutombo,” he was known for his defensive prowess and is commonly regarded as one of the best shot-blockers and defensive players of all time. His finger wave celebration after blocks remains iconic and is still mimicked by players 15 years after his retirement in 2009. |
