Though he liked to draw in grade school, he studied music in college and directed church choirs for several years. He became seriously interested in painting after attending an art workshop in 1979, and returned to school to complete a BFA at the University of Texas at Austin. While working as a muralist and illustrator, he developed skills in oil painting, and began to do portrait paintings for individuals and institutions. Current work focuses on portrait and figurative paintings, and plein air landscapes in oil and pastel. He taught "Introduction to Fine Art" at Dallas Baptist University for 18 years and draws some of his inspiration for paintings from having studied the various genres of the arts (music, dance, drama, film, sculpture, painting, photography, architecture). Artist Statement Many of my paintings are meant to evoke in the viewer an emotion, a half-remembered event, situation, or person, or a curiosity - where the meaning is left up to the viewer's interpretation. Some paintings are modern day settings of Biblical stories, or expressions of faith. Some include scenes or objects which relate to my personal interests in art, music, or travels. Others combine two or more existing images or stories to create a new work of art. Although I enjoy painting small landscapes, I am most interested in expressing my feelings and ideas through figurative and portrait subjects.
