MetroHealth: MetroHealth System will now require employees, including contractors and volunteers, to receive COVID-19 vaccinations. The deadline is Oct. 30, reports Julie Washington. MetroHealth said it is doing so for the safety of patients.
UH and Clinic: Leaders of University Hospitals and the Cleveland Clinic say they’re worried healthcare workers would rather quit or be fired if they had a vaccine mandate, Julie Washington reports.
Geauga commissioner: Geauga County’s public health commissioner has been fired after he posted on Facebook that insurance companies should not pay for coronavirus treatment for people who aren’t vaccinated. Jeremy Pelzer reports that Tom Quade, a past president of the American Public Health Association and the Ohio Public Health Association, apologized for the remark -- which he later deleted -- during a lengthy meeting of the Geauga County Board of Health on Wednesday. But people spoke for more than an hour urging the board to remove him.
Mills trial: The former director of nursing in the Cuyahoga County Jail told jurors on Thursday that ex-jail director Ken Mills, who faces charges that accuse him of negligence and mismanagement, tried to reorganize staff so he would oversee the nurses who worked in the facility. Cory Shaffer reports Marcus Harris testified that Mills said “everyone in the jail works for me.” Also, Cuyahoga County’s deputy inspector general testified the jail "smelled like old garbage" during an inspection in 2018. Redistricting: Republicans and Democrats on the Ohio Redistricting Commission have until Wednesday to possibly agree on new state legislative maps. But with days to spare, they still can’t agree on a meeting schedule dictating when the public will get its first look at a possible map, among other internal procedural commission rules, Andrew Tobias reports.

Afghanistan reaction: Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and U.S. Congress members from Northeast Ohio took to social media and issued media statements to express their dismay over a suicide attack outside Kabul’s airport that killed American soldiers and dozens of civilians attempting to flee Afghanistan. COVID cases: Newly reported coronavirus cases continue to spike in the state, with the Ohio Department of Health reporting 5,395 new cases Thursday. Laura Hancock reports the 10 counties with the greatest number of cases per 100,000 residents are in rural areas.
School COVID cases: Cincinnati Public Schools reported the highest increase in COVID-19 infections among Ohio school districts in the latest weekly report from the state’s Department of Health. Alexis Oatman reports Strongsville had the most new infections among districts in Northeast Ohio, with 20 new cases among students and three new cases among staff members.
Officer charged: The president of Cleveland’s Black Shield Police Association is facing discipline after internal affairs investigators accused him of repeatedly contacting a Tremont bar owner charged with bribing a police officer. Sgt. Vincent Montague faces 17 disciplinary charges involving his contact with former Duck Island Club bar owner Andrew Long, and later lying about it, Adam Ferrise reports.
Capitol riot: An Ohio bartender and her fellow Oath Keepers are named in a lawsuit filed Thursday by seven U.S. Capitol police officers, who accused them of heeding the call of former President Donald Trump and rioting Jan. 6. John Caniglia reports Jessica Watkins of Champaign County is listed as a defendant in the case filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.
Alzheimer’s research: The Cleveland Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, led by the Cleveland Clinic, has been awarded a five-year, $15.4 million grant from the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health, Julie Washington reports. The Alzheimer’s research center brings together top physicians and scientists from the Clinic, Case Western Reserve University, Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, MetroHealth System and University Hospitals.
Kent cash: Kent State University will hand out $32,000 in drawings for eligible faculty and staff members who get at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and register their vaccination status with the university, Megan Becka reports.
Akron Marathon: The FirstEnergy Akron Marathon, Half Marathon and Team Relay events will require all runners and event volunteers to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have a negative test 72 hours before the race, reports Megan Becka.
Mackinac Island: Mackinac Island is an idyllic island getaway, steeped in the past, with beautiful, Victorian architecture, lush greenspaces, all surrounded by the deep blue lake.
