Steinhoff strikes again

Good Morning Voornaam,

Make the most of the quiet moments this December and ramp up your knowledge on how to analyse global stocks. Our latest show in Magic Markets Premium is on Crocs, a company that proves that you should never judge a book by its (hideous) cover. For this research and access to a library of around 60 reports and podcasts, subscribe today for R99/month or R990/year>>>

Ghost Bites:

  • Accelerate Property Fund is struggling to live up to its name, with pressure on income growth
  • DRA Global font> raised almost R93 million by placing treasury shares with an investor
  • The offer by GMB Liquidity Corporation to shareholders of Grand Parade Investments has been recommended by the board
  • Harmony has concluded the Eva Copper deal
  • There's just one regulatory hurdle left for Impala Platinum in the Royal Bafokeng Platinum deal, but the offer terms look unappealing compared to what Northam Platinum has put on the table - is a bidding war only just heating up?
  • Mondi has agreed to sell more Russian assets
  • MTN's pre-close update drove a sharp sell-off in telcos stocks last Thursday, with Telkom as the (predictable) biggest loser
  • The end is nigh for Steinhoff ordinary shareholders, with an announcement that shocked the market and sent the share into freefall

Indeed, the name Stainhoff is fully applicable again. In this case, even Omo can't get the stain out. Shareholders look set to lose practically everything, a truly horrible outcome five years (almost to the day) after the company's initial collapse. For these details and more, make sure you read a bumper edition of Ghost Bites that summarises an extremely busy day on the JSE>>>

Enjoy the final Ghost Wrap episode of 2022

Of everything I experimented with in 2022, Ghost Wra p seems to have hit the spot the best. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and the download numbers back this up.

To find out what all the fuss is about, get up to speed with MTN and the telcos, Steinhoff, Alviva, Mpact, PBT Group, Shoprite, Massmart and Grand Parade in this week's edition of Ghost Wrap - a whirlwind update in just seven minutes! Chris Gilmour is worried about infrastructure investment

As we wind down for the year, Chris Gilmour helps keep our brai ns sharp with fascinating insights into global infrastructure development spend. As much as South Africans love to believe that the rest of the world is perfect, the numbers don't lie. Find out for yourself in this article>>>

You cannot afford to miss this podcast

The latest episode of Magic Markets is terrific, featuring global geopolitical analyst Marko Papic. He has (literally) travelled the world, advising the largest pension funds and institutional shareholders on the planet. Mohammed Nalla knows him personally and pulled a few strings to get him onto the show, something I'm immensely grateful for. You'll understand why I was so excited if you listen to Episode 106 of Magic Markets>>>

Hikes have been priced in

Despite the 50 basis point hikes by three major central banks (the Fed, BoE and ECB), the moves in the currencies were as expected. The ECB was a little more hawkish than its counterpart in the US, which helped the euro gain some ground against the dollar. TreasuryONE notes that it will be no surprise if the Eurozone goes into recession in 2023 and US retail numbers delivered a disappointing print, so rate hikes are bringing headwinds to US consumers and disposable income.

The rand traded in a stable ran ge, with the focus on the outcome of the ANC elective conference as we head into this week.

As you can see, the markets aren't done yet in 2022. Thanks for making time for Ghost Mail this morning!

Ghost Bites (Accelerate | DRA Global | Grand Parade | Harmony | Implats - Northam - RBPlats | Mondi | MTN | Steinhoff)

Accelerate isn't accelerating. DRA Global placed treasury shares. Offer for Grand Parade is fair and reasonable. Harmony closes Eva Copper deal. Implats has one hurdle left. Mondi sells more Russian assets. MTN pre-close update. It's over at Steinhoff.

Chris Gilmour is clearly still busy this December, taking a fascinating look at the infrastructure spend deficit in critical economies like the US.

Inadequate infrastructure expenditure in the developed world

Telcos. Steinhoff. A take-private of Alviva. These are just some of the important updates in the final edition of Ghost Wrap for 2022.

This is an absolute must-listen, featuring international geopolitical analyst Marko Papic and his (often unorthodox) views on China, energy, Europe and so much more.
