BY DOUG GRAHAM | Staff writer Louisiana's summer swelter continues: 25 residents have died from the heat since May, according to state officials, and daily records for maximum temperature have been eclipsed in several locations. Baton Rouge topped out Wednesday at 105, against the historic maximum of 110 on Aug. 19, 1909. The city has recorded 26 days this year of temperatures of 100 or higher; its record is 28 days. Near the Texas border, a Beauregard Parish wildfire has blackened 12,000 acres and was burning out of control toward the town of Merryville.
Superintendent Sito Narcisse has signaled for the past week his plan to rework the district school schedule, but has been mum about the specifics. Any new schedule, if approved by the board, would upend the before- and afterschool plans of many of the children in the school district, as well as the district’s 5,000-plus employees. At a special meeting Thursday, the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board will consider new start and end time for schools for the rest of 2023-24 school year.
