Memorial Day Is A Holiday To Reflect! Memorial Day is on the 29th of May. It is a day to commemorate the soldiers who gave up their lives for the country. Even though it is a solemn event, it is an awaited break for the assiduous Americans. It is a beautiful summer weekend. Most of the Americans like to spend some quiet family time, they almost feel obligated to leave town. I especially like to be in a snooze mode or enjoy meeting my friends in my backyard especially Fred, the Vietnamese war veteran and get awed by the stories of courage and sacrifice. As a child I remember it was more eventful for me. I would begin the day watching the parade of soldiers and armed forces veterans along with a brass band, fife and drum corps marching by, from Court Street to the Pine Hill Cemetery where they laid the flowers on the graves of those who died in the wars. “The parade represents togetherness,” the voice of my teacher still resonates in my ears. The custom of flying the flag at half staff until noon and then raise it to the top of the staff until sunset was exciting for me as a student.
