MEF Report: U.S. Intel Failures on Iran Proxies Underscore Need for Regime Change News from the Middle East Forum March 20, 2024 https://www.meforum.org/65696/mef-report-us-intel-failures-on-iran-proxies PHILADELPHIA – March 20, 2024 – Iran and its proxies are rampaging: an attack on Pakistan, the Oct. 7 Hamas invasion of Israel, Hezbollah attacks on Israel, Houthi strikes on maritime trade in the Red Sea, the killing of American soldiers, and more. Yet, the U.S. government fails to see the problem. According to Politico, Intelligence officials have calculated that Tehran does not have full control over its proxy groups in the Middle East, including those responsible for attacking and killing U.S. troops in recent weeks, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the matter. This dangerous misconception allows Iran to increase its malign activities almost without cost. A new report from the Middle East Forum, "A World without the Islamic Republic of Iran," exposes Iran's proxy network and Tehran's direct command and control over it. The report argues that this threat can be eliminated in only one way: by ending the Khomeinist regime. No concessions or negotiations will deter that regime from regional domination. Instead, the U.S. government must support the aspirations of the Iranian people for a free and democratic government, one that respects human rights and seeks peace with its neighbors. Report co-author Jim Hanson explains: "The U.S. intelligence community's failure to recognize the severity of Iran's proxy threat brought us to this dismal state of affairs, as symbolized by the Houthis' continued interference in global trade. The time has come, for the first time in 45 years, for the White House to make the overthrow of the Islamic Republic its goal." MEF director Gregg Roman adds, "The Middle East Forum is committed to exposing the true nature of the Islamic Republic and working towards a future where the Iranian people can live in freedom and dignity."
