Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Tiffany Cross

MSNBC contributor Tiffany Cross made this space just a week ago for her scheduled guest host spot, and list-topping status as a potential full-time replacement for Joy Reid.

That guest host gig was this weekend, and it went exceedingly well. It was followed swiftly by the release of her new book, "The End of White Politics: How to Heal Our Liberal Divide," which she showcased in an extensive Morning Joe segment on Monday.

That was then followed by a fiery on-air roast of Kayleigh McEnany this morning.

"I think we have to speak truth to the people who are watching right now and the people who are suffering from this. Kayleigh McEnany is a liar who lies for a bigger liar, and it's devastating people," she said of the press secretary's parting rant yesterday.

If you're still in the speculating business, these are all signs that point to "yes" on the question of front-runner. The combination of book buzz and steadily climbing name recognition made for a solid weekend for the frequent on-air presence.

And a solid, media-winning set of moments for Cross.

MEDIA LOSER:
Katie and Stephen Miller

Katie Miller, communications director for Vice President Mike Pence, may have just caught up with her husband — White House senior adviser Stephen Miller — in sheer revulsion from critics of the Trump administration with a book quote that made Marie Antoinette sound sensitive.

She told NBC reporter and "Separated: Inside an American Tragedy" author Jacob Soboroff that she traveled to DHS migrant detention facilities to get her compassion on, but "it didn't work."
When Soboroff asked her if she's a "white nationalist," she replied "No, but I believe if you come to America, you should assimilate, why do we need to have Little Havana?"

That sparked a blizzard of outrage directed at both of the Millers, and included some not-so-well-wishes for the happy couple.

"There’s a special place in Hell reserved for Katie Miller and the other Trump cronies who only know cruelty toward children," read one typical tweet. Hitler references likewise abounded.

Credit Rachel Maddow for the uproar, who highlighted the book passage Monday, giving the quote just the launchpad it needed.

The A-Block

"Hitler was a bad person"

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson said he has “no hatred” for Jewish people after he posted several anti-Semitic quotes attributed to Adolf Hitler on his Instagram. Jackson also claimed that people “took [his] post the wrong way” in an Instagram story post meant to clarify the comments Tuesday morning.

Jackson eventually apologized and took back his slew of posts in a video Tuesday afternoon.

Leaning into racist

Anderson Cooper absolutely unloaded on President Donald Trump Monday night over his increasingly open embrace of racist symbolism like Confederate flags and more.

“Tonight he’s safe inside his biological bunker surrounded by people wearing masks getting tested and… encouraging the rest of us not to follow the best scientific advice,” Cooper said. “He’s trying to persuade the country that the virus is simply vanishing, or if that won’t work, he’s trying to divert people’s attention elsewhere to smearing a black NASCAR driver, supporting the Confederate flag and statutes of traitors.”

Oh it goes on...

Meltdown

John Kasich, former Ohio governor and Republican presidential candidate, said on CNN Monday night that President Donald Trump is “flailing” because he’s losing in the polls.

He’s in a meltdown,” Kasich said. “And he look his polls and doesn’t know who to blame. He blames his advisers and he’s even blaming Fox News now.

Whispers

The Lincoln Project went after President Donald Trump’s paranoia on Tuesday by claiming “everyone” is disloyal to him, and that’s the reason why his administration has so many leaks.

It's quite a video.

Well...

CNN political commentators Bakari Sellers and Rick Santorum duked it out on Tuesday in a heated debate — during which Sellers bashed George Washington and Santorum drew a parallel between slavery and abortion.

If they could've thrown in a Hitler reference it would have been the Platonic ideal of cable news fight club.

Fox News at Night Scores

Fox News at Night scored impressive Thursday night ratings win, ranking as the fourth-highest show on the network in the coveted 25 – 54 age demographic, surpassing even ratings powerhouse The Five. All together, Fox News romped to victory in both overall and A25 – 54 viewers across total day and primetime dayparts.

With guest host Mike Emanuel in for Shannon BreamFox News at Night easily beat The 11th Hour with Brian Williams, its MSNBC competition.

Wear the mask

“The idea of doing one’s part, though, should be so simple — wear a mask, social distance, wash your hands,” said actor Tom Hanks during an appearance on the TODAY show Tuesday — his first TV interview since contracting the coronavirus.

"It is literally the least you can do," said Hanks. "If you can't wear a mask and wash your hands and social distance...I got no respect for ya man, I don't buy your argument."

Stepping Down

Ben Shapiro is stepping down from his role as editor-in-chief of the conservative news and opinion website he founded, the Daily Wire. John Bickley, a longtime writer and editor for the Daily Wire, will take over Shapiro’s position while he settles into a new role as editor emeritus.

Also Stepping Down

Actress Halle Berry stepped away from a role as a transgender character in an upcoming film, after facing backlash on social media, and apologized for considering it.

"As a cisgender woman, I now understand that I should not have considered this role," said Berry, who also promised to "be an ally" in the future.

"This stifling atmosphere will ultimately harm the most vital causes of our time"

J.K. Rowling, Bari Weiss, Noam Chomsky, and more than 100 other writers, scholars, and academics signed a letter in Harper’s Magazine calling for “open debate” and an end to cancel culture, sparking backlash from both liberal and conservative pundits.

Must See Clip

Terry Crews and Don Lemon

CNN host Don Lemon clashed with Terry Crews over the Black Lives Matter movement in a feisty but friendly interview on Monday, and the sometimes heated clash became the stuff of social media legend on Tuesday morning. Or at least, of social media trendage.

The back-and-forth was gripping, even with the glitches that come along with Skype interviewing, and the topic is as now as it gets.

It was, in every sense, must-see (cable news) TV.
