| | | The Fringe Figure Who Says He’s Advising Republicans On Their Hunter Biden Probe | | As congressional Republicans ramp up their efforts to investigate Hunter Biden, the president’s son, they are getting help from a controversial source, HuffPost has learned — a former Trump White House staffer who has reposted far-right material online and played a role in the Trump White House’s effort to contest the 2020 election results.
The former Trump staffer, Garrett Ziegler, has bragged of meetings with congressional investigators who have worked for months to dig into Hunter Biden’s overseas business dealings and the contents of his abandoned laptop. At least one committee chair has implied the probe is actually about hurting President Joe Biden’s reelection chances. Speaking to HuffPost, Ziegler denied any bigoted beliefs, but he has also repeatedly reposted material online from the prominent white nationalist Nick Fuentes and other bigots.
During phone interviews with HuffPost, Ziegler described himself as a “paleoconservative” — not a “bogeyman” — and compared himself to Pat Buchanan. “There are some things that I agree with Nick Fuentes on, and some that I don’t,” he said of his online presence. Referring to reposting material, he said, “sometimes you just do it because you think it’s a very, very good thing for the conversation.”
Ziegler himself has referred on multiple occasions to meetings or correspondence with congressional investigators, including an attorney on the House Oversight Committee staff and House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan’s (R-Ohio) chief of staff. More recently, he bragged of a planned meeting with Jordan himself — though one he now says did not occur. At least two members of Congress have praised his work in interviews, saying it contained potential evidence of criminality by the Biden family. He also says he’s met personally with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) in the member of Congress’ office. | | |
| | | Missouri plans to execute Michael Tisius Tuesday despite widespread pleas to spare his life. When Tisius was 19 years old, he killed two jail guards during a botched attempt to free his former cellmate — who now says he "manipulated" Tisius and talked him into the failed escape attempt. |
| | | The Department of Homeland Security plans to announce Tuesday that, for the first time, it is launching a large-scale effort with a major industry in tribal communities to fight human trafficking, which disproportionately affects Native women. The department’s Blue Campaign, its public awareness effort on trafficking, is unveiling a new toolkit specifically tailored to educating frontline tribal gaming and hospitality employees on how to detect and report trafficking in casinos and bingo halls. It is partnering with the National Indian Gaming Commission, which helped create the toolkit, to train employees nationwide, including security and transportation staff, casino gaming attendants, food and beverage staff, housekeeping and maintenance staff, and front-of-house staff. |
| | | The Atlanta City Council pushed forward legislation early Tuesday that would help fund a controversial public safety training facility. The council voted 11-4 in favor of the legislation, which would allocate an additional $31 million from the 2023 uncommitted general fund budget toward the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center. The move comes after an enormous turnout at a City Council meeting on Monday in which community members and organizers vocalized their disapproval of the facility, popularly known as “Cop City,” in more than 14 hours of public comment. The Atlanta Public Safety Training Center would boast at least 85 acres of land in the South River Forest, an area with a complex history that includes at least one plantation, a prison farm, and the violent removal of Indigenous people. The city said the Atlanta Police Foundation will raise two-thirds of the total cost, about $60 million, to build the facility through “philanthropic and corporate donations.” But, the remaining amount is set to come from taxpayers. |
| | | Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie filed paperwork Tuesday to seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, positioning himself as an alternative to Donald Trump and someone who isn’t afraid of calling out the former president. The 60-year-old former governor, who is known for his combative style, has signaled that his campaign will focus on challenging the GOP front-runner head-on, in marked contrast to other declared and would-be candidates in the race. “I’m not dumb. The way to win is to beat the guy that’s ahead. And so what would a campaign look like? A campaign would look like a direct, frontal challenge to Donald Trump,” Christie said in a Dispatch podcast last month. “His presidency failed us.” |
